tried to search online for a vintage lamp today and every site returned multiple fake AI-generated photos of lamps from brands/designers that do not exist; Google search results were just garbage all the way down. AI really is going to be the thing that kills the Internet, isn’t it?
Regional networks and support are SO important, but following CCCC‘s dechartering, I believe we need national and international organizing to maintain our discipline and combat the intensifying authoritarianism that brought down our org in the first place.
It's wild because comp is the most widely offered course at any university across the nation & many faculty across all English fields teach comp more than they teach in their expertise. 1000s of people who don't even study comp rely on the CCCCs for resources and conversations abt teaching writing.
These "we have made an AI so powerful" warnings are straight-up advertisements, btw. No different than "we have made an Oreo so delicious all other snack artists must relent."

In the wake of NCTE's (disastrous! atrocious! condemnable!) decision to de-charter CCCC, I know there are lots of efforts underway to try to make sense of what's happening and what might be next.
AI execs: "we plan to build so many data centers that they we will eventually blot out the sun building them in space." Some experimental psychologist with a substack: "okay but cUrReNtLy ExIsTiNg data centers don't consume all that much energy, compared when you think about it. THIS IS FINE!"

Imagine the conversation we could have about this travesty if NCTE didn’t require Cs officers and executive committee members to sign confidentiality agreements. Folks should also ask NCTE about how and whether their lucrative grant/partnership with Google was part of what Cs “culture” threatened.

I cannot imagine any responsible way to use AI as a Black woman. Using it responsibly for work isn't predicated on how we use it but on how the evaluator considers the user reasonable. And well...we don't generally get that benefit of the doubt.
The #NCTE is looking forward to re-marginalizing first-year academic writing as a field for reasons that are “exciting” and should certainly escape linkage to status or to institutional resistance to equity& access advocacy.

Okay this is news. Apparently the C's Executive Committee presented NCTE with a budget that completely closed the budget gap weeks ago. As in, C's SOLVED THE BUDGET PROBLEM. And @ncte.org dragged the conference back behind the woodshed and shot it anyway. Their budget claims were a total lie.

I wish the reporter had expiunded on the differences between the organizations’ AI stances. NCTE, for example, has partnered with Google, while CCCC has started recognizing a range of student and teacher responses, including refusal.
