Fellow Americans, I know you're struggling to pay your bills and keep up with rising food and gas prices and you've given up on owning a home and constantly wonder if AI is going to replace your job, but you'll be pleased to know Trump has renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America.
We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

A lovely thread about Dolly Parton. 🧵
Why am I grieving because Dolly Parton has died? I didn’t know her, and while I have a love of country music, and recognise those girls as a songwriter and a singer, I only own handful of songs by her. I am grieving because she was, in the most naive formulation“a good person”.
dolly parton was many things, but what i think resonates so deeply is that she was kind. ACTIVELY kind. when i talk about proving love, this is what i mean. ACTIVE kindness. ACTIVE love. it can be easy to dismiss kindness, but i think the reaction to her passing shows it is not at all a placeholder
Welp — we’ll let Republican Rep. Massie handle this one 👀
For me it depends on the stage of their career! Unpubbed: It's all in the edits! Rewriting isn't failure, it's leveling up! Don't fear the work Debut: Relax and enjoy the moment! Don't look at reviews or metrics, and don't exhaust yourself doing publicity Pubbed (trad): Ask. For. More. Time 🌈✨💖

No matter whether you're intending to publish the piece or not, you gotta stop writing for your Very Worst And Most Horriblest Readers. Are they out there? Yes! Will they read your book? Probably! Do you have to give a shit? You do NOT.

Stay in the basement. All that scribbling in obscurity is what builds who you are as an artist. Once you're in the world, People will want to decide what you do. It's very important that you never hear a thing they say Especially if you're a people pleaser

"How do I write a great work of art that fulfills my vision?" and "How do I write a book that a major publisher will buy?" are two different questions with two different answers. (There is overlap, but the answers do diverge.) Know your goals.

But teach yourself to recognize success. Teach yourself to take a quiet pride in having made something--even if it is imperfect; even if it is incomplete. Teach yourself to look at your writing with an eye for what you love, and not only what requires repair.
It's tempting to spend your life optimizing--to finish a chapter and think only of all of the things you need to fix in it. To publish a book and think only of the awards for which you weren't nominated or the royalties you don't earn (and of course, all the things you wish you'd fixed in it).
Learn to take pleasure in your successes. Learn how many successes you have: a well-turned sentence, a character's breakthrough realization, a finished chapter, a day where you didn't think you could write at all but managed five difficult words.

FYI for journalists reporting on Dolly: not being publicly party political ≠ not being political. She was very political.
Before Europeans arrived, these were some of the names for The Great Lakes: Superior: gichi-gami (great sea) Erie: erielhonan (long tail) Michigan: michigami (long body of water) Ontario: Ontarí'io\kanadario (great lake\beautiful water) Huron: karegnondi (fresh water sea)
Feeling cute might sacrifice you to the Old Gods later 🥰
#queerwriters Monday: Goals Day! Last week I didn't get much done, but it's nearly the END of the month, so I'm going to try and put my ass into gear a little more. This week, I'm going to: ➕ Add 3 more agents to my query list 📝 Outline the next chapter of my WIP 💻 Start writing said chapter

Being undocumented in the United States is a civil violation. It is not a felony. It is not even a misdemeanor.
Here's some perspective: Undocumented immigration isn't a capital offense. It isn't even a criminal offense. People are being brutalized and killed, losing all their possessions, being thrown in camps, separated from their American families and deported over a civil offense.
I was dying of thirst when you gave me water, yet it was not the water alone that saved me. It was the strength of the hands that gave it.
Hey all, very annoyingly this site (short-stories.co) is posting shorts without permission from authors, have a look and let them know if you have one on there: short-stories.co

Finally got to touching up probably the most popular doodle I've ever done, lmao. Wonder if this would work as a bookmark?
