KOSA has been an Internet censorship bill from the start. It imposes what courts have refused—on First Amendment grounds—to impose for decades: a duty to protect listeners from subjective, unknowable reactions to constitutionally protected speech. It creates a "papers please" social media regime where every single social media user will be forced to identify themselves before speaking on social media, undermining their constitutional right to read and speak anonymously, and enabling government retaliation against disfavored ideas and expression. And it hands the Federal Trade Commission — which has of late granted itself the authority to enforce what it thinks customers should want rather than protect against actual deception — a ready-made tool to coerce platforms into removing speech it dislikes from the Internet. Despite years of warnings from experts and civil society across the political and ideological spectrum, KOSA's sponsors have stubbornly refused to acknowledge and fix these critical First Amendment problems. They have instead attempted to hide them behind increasingly obfuscatory language. But the First Amendment is not so easily fooled, and the Commerce Committee must put an end to this constitutional fiasco once and for all.

These bans are ineffective for their stated purpose, but they *do* empower states to create ugly architectures of surveillance and control. This will not solve the problems that lead social media to be a festering malignancy on democracy, it just erodes our freedoms for no discernible gain.

I intend to write more thoroughly about this soon, but the fad for social media child bans should be resolutely resisted at all costs. There are genuine public health concerns about social media, yes. But unlike smoking, it has genuinely salubrious effects as well--including for teens.

Australia’s eSafety commissioner buried a report (released Friday afternoon) that shows the under 16 social media ban didn’t tangibly reduce teen social media use, and also resulted in parents tuning out of kids usage. We traded our privacy for no reason. theconversation.com/more-than-80...

Given that I remember people in the 80s saying stuff “now” is disposable crap, unlike what they “used to make”, and now people talk about how stuff made “back then” (the 80s) was meant to last, I think we are at least partly living through multiple iterations of survivorship bias.

stripping OMB of the ability to dole out grants is an enormous win, this nukes the SAVE act, it prohibits further ICE bailouts, adding a "no, really, trump can't break already on-the-books laws regarding elections the federal government doesn't run" clause would be both unnecessary and unproductive

This topic is on fire rn, but this is correct. And for those concerned with bias, here's the thing: you can intentionally push AI-based search around in ways you can't possibly do with web search. If you want more minority voices in your search results, AI search is far, far superior to web search.

i just cant take anyone that preaches web search is superior to AI seriously. web search is great - except for the seo manipulation, ads, and lack of weighting of sources, which would be a very difficult task to do even if it wasn't mangled by late stage capitalism and the current political climate.

if there’s anything I would want to drill into the public consciousness it’s that there are almost always like a dozen ways to approach any given problem and some of them will be more effective than others and we have to stop acting like the questions around it are against fixing the issue
