I met Lindsay Graham once. He sat behind me and a friend at Hamilton in August 2016. At intermission, I asked him if he was enjoying the show. He said that he was, and that he was surprised to learn how much conflict there was among colonial Americans, even among those who wanted independence.
Happy Fourth. On this day, I like to revisit Frederick Douglass’ “What to a Slave is the Fourth of July,” and in particular, this video NPR produced a few years back of portions of the speech being read by Douglass’ descendants. youtu.be/NBe5qbnkqoM?...

There’s a special kind of irony in watching the “shall not be infringed” crowd twist themselves into knots insisting birthright citizenship shouldn’t exist. It’s amazing how flexible “absolute” rights become when they’re someone else’s.
On the final day of Pride Month, it bears repeating, again and again: Trans rights are human rights. Trans rights are human rights. Trans rights are human rights. Trans rights are human rights.
Looking forward to what Mel Brooks does for the next 1,900 years.
Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the ways power holds on. How it held on through sharecropping, redlining, & Jim Crow laws. How it continues to hold on through the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery except as punishment for a crime, mass incarceration, and the gutting of the Voting Rights Act.

My mayor Muslim My bagels Jewish This city alive Knicks won it in five
For those of you who don’t follow sports closely, let me break this down for you: this is basically as insane a happening as, like, the New York Knicks winning an NBA championship, say.
i fear that far too few people are seriously considering and planning for what the right will be willing to do to stay in power
[Fireworks go off down the street] Me, half asleep: Oh, the Knicks won? Nice! [I doze off again. End scene.]

Lesley Manville, at the #TonyAwards: Would anyone like to write a play for five women? Everyone in the room at the party I'm attending: PLEASE!!!
My goodness, Ali Louis Bourzgui's #TonyAwards speech choked me right up. That was beautiful, and the award was well earned.
Did I miss Laurie Metcalf thanking Scott Rudin? #TonyAwards
