Scientist, teacher, writer, Dodgers fan, parent, music lover. Mostly bookposting, baseball posting, a smattering of science and politics. Gender? That's a question I don't have an answer to.
where are the 500 professors signing an open letter about a professor being fired for talking about gender?
I don't know how the hell you teach Shakespeare's comedies without talking about gender. www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-...
I guess it's kind of hard to view the dismissal of one grublike phrenologist as a major hit to free speech after major American universities have in the past year banned the use of words and eliminated entire departments in the hopes of pleasing the senile president
I have been selected for the Speculative Fiction Young Adult Workshop at the McCormack Writing Center, to revise my novel, Elia In Isola, with Tehlor Kay Mejia! I am fundraising for tuition: no pressure to donate, I appreciate shares too! #writingcommunity www.gofundme.com/f/galens-spe...

The Witch Roads is so good. Such a classic fantasy feel with modern sensibilities, brilliant worldbuilding and great writing. Go check this out!

This could have just stopped at “no point in having a columnist”. If someone wants to spout low-info opinions with no interest in telling the whole story with a shred of compassion, the internet is loaded with sites that just eat that stuff up. We’re better off without opinion pieces in the papers.
No point in having a columnist if you're spiking columns. This Seattle Times v. Matt Calkins mess blew up like a hand grenade. I'm spilling some tea today. Read:
Stop being mean to people. Stop being an asshole. Stop it
Guillotine is on the TBR list, but I've read Kill the Farm Boy and it is every bit as delightfully funny and punny and fantastic as the title suggests. For $2? Joy rarely comes this cheap.
Choose your own BOOK SALE adventure: 🐐 If you want funny, punny Fantasy, buy KILL THE FARM BOY for only $1.99 🌹 If you want violent retribution against billionaires on their private island, buy GUILLOTINE for only $1.99 🔥 If you want a wild ride from whimsical to dark, CHOOSE BOTH for only $4!

Keep focusing. Enjoy the last few days of Kid #2 being at home. Eat a peach. #weeknightwriters
Q4: What can you do in the next week to make your life a little more pleasant? #WeeknightWriters
Got two boxes of peaches from the fruit stand today. It's finally Peach Season! I remembered some worldbuilding I'd failed to take notes on while I was writing today and it made such a huge difference in my scene. Is this what being able to focus feels like? Because I LIKE it. #weeknightwriters
Q3: Let's cheer things up a bit! What has brought you joy in the past week? Remember, no joy is too small! #WeeknightWriters
I realized today when I was writing that I need some song lyrics for this scene. I am not any kind of songwriter or poet, or at least I never have been. I've placeholdered it for now, but... anyone have suggestions for how to free up that part of the brain? #weeknightwriters
Q2: Is there anything specific you're struggling with this week? Let us know about it and we'll see what we can do to help! #WeeknightWriters
Not going to lie, I was pretty disappointed with myself, having largely wasted several free days. But I think it's turning around. Feeling productive and positive today. #weeknightwriters
Q1: How are you holding up this week? (Or not holding, as the case may be) #WeeknightWriters
Julia here, again late for the start! I'm consistent if nothing else. The week started out poorly. So frustrating when you have all this free time and can't get the words out. Today was good though, able to focus, lots of words, I even liked the broad strokes of the scene. #weeknightwriters
Hello #WeeknightWriters ! Come on in, introduce yourself and your WIP, and let us know how your writing week is going! Or not going, that's valid too
That’s great to hear! I guess because of this, you should do a puff piece about her with soft focus lighting where she talks about how the way people speak of her hurts her feelings without ever discussing the truth of the allegations made against her.
Gailey: that's right Gailey: colonel horatio T. Mchefferbottom III and her royal majesty's 12th airborne hippo division is back in action for a ripping bunch of two-fisted tales of wholesale hippo slaughter Gailey: the swamps will run blood Gailey: there's also romance too
Now that we've got ABS, can we please get bat tracking to call check swing strikes?
Imposter syndrome is dead. No matter how bad you think you are, there is someone getting paid for using a chat bot to do it worse.
So, I sent my first queries ever. I'm not gonna post my 'journey' or anything like that. I want to keep things mellow on socials. This is an accountability post to keep me focused/driven. Anyhow, if anyone wants something for spooky season, I got you. #Writingcommunity #Writesky #amquerying
I wrote about a reason not to use generative AI in your writing that I haven't seen anyone talking about. Once I realized this, banning GenAI in our lab's writing became a no-brainer. Feel free to share, I think this is probably useful especially for trainees: www.carlsonlab.bio/thoughts/the...
The only reason you’ll ever need not to write with AI — The Carlson Lab
Over the last year, our lab has been developing a policy on AI use. To do this, we did three main things: We read a lot of academic publications and tech news. We set up an #ai channel on our la...

the reactionaries sort of thought you could just thrust your chest out and slap a bunch of paint and memes on things and recover national pride and a lost era of white male triumph or whatever. how's your national pride now. are you proud yet. are you feeling strong
The moderators of the King George County Community Facebook page took a post about this story down and told me it’s because it is “stirring the pot.” Wouldn’t it be great if everyone on Bluesky saw this story in response to their censorship? www.advocate.com/opinion/king...
These LGBTQ+ Virginia kids found support and community in school. Then, bigoted adults took that away
The hardest thing about growing up queer isn’t being different. It’s what adults like conservatives in King George County do because of it, writes John Casey.

Middle-aged woman cons, heists, magics, frees her people from fascists. Middle-aged is one word right? Heist and magic are verbs right? Trust me, I am a Writer (tm). 😇
Stealing from hellsite threads. Can you sell us your book in 10 words or less? #writingQ #writingprompt
There are more cops facing current investigations and punishment for using flock cameras and the tracking network than there are trans kids in sports. Just a data point.
Please tell people that you love them. If you can do something to support your community, with your time or your money or even just by supporting friends and neighbors, please consider it. You never know when it might be gone. #weeknightwriters
Q5: What can we, the Weeknight Writers community, do in the next week to make your life a little more pleasant? #WeeknightWriters
Besides the whole family safe and healthy bit, discovering an ending scene (well, two ending scenes, since the POV splits) to the WIP was exciting. And rereading some good bits I wrote in the first draft that made me smile. Small joys are good ones. #weeknightwriters
Q3: Let's cheer things up a bit! What has brought you joy in the past week? Remember, no joy is too small! #WeeknightWriters
Yeah, but there's only so much you all can do right this moment about climate change turning the west coast into a tinder box. #weeknightwriters
Q2: Is there anything specific you're struggling with this week? Let us know about it and we'll see what we can do to help! #WeeknightWriters
