Scientist, teacher, writer, Dodgers fan, parent, music lover. Mostly bookposting, baseball posting, a smattering of science and politics. Gender? That's a question I don't have an answer to.

I guess it's kind of hard to view the dismissal of one grublike phrenologist as a major hit to free speech after major American universities have in the past year banned the use of words and eliminated entire departments in the hopes of pleasing the senile president

The Witch Roads is so good. Such a classic fantasy feel with modern sensibilities, brilliant worldbuilding and great writing. Go check this out!

This could have just stopped at “no point in having a columnist”. If someone wants to spout low-info opinions with no interest in telling the whole story with a shred of compassion, the internet is loaded with sites that just eat that stuff up. We’re better off without opinion pieces in the papers.

No point in having a columnist if you're spiking columns. This Seattle Times v. Matt Calkins mess blew up like a hand grenade. I'm spilling some tea today. Read:

Got two boxes of peaches from the fruit stand today. It's finally Peach Season! I remembered some worldbuilding I'd failed to take notes on while I was writing today and it made such a huge difference in my scene. Is this what being able to focus feels like? Because I LIKE it. #weeknightwriters

I realized today when I was writing that I need some song lyrics for this scene. I am not any kind of songwriter or poet, or at least I never have been. I've placeholdered it for now, but... anyone have suggestions for how to free up that part of the brain? #weeknightwriters

Julia here, again late for the start! I'm consistent if nothing else. The week started out poorly. So frustrating when you have all this free time and can't get the words out. Today was good though, able to focus, lots of words, I even liked the broad strokes of the scene. #weeknightwriters

Hello #WeeknightWriters ! Come on in, introduce yourself and your WIP, and let us know how your writing week is going! Or not going, that's valid too

That’s great to hear! I guess because of this, you should do a puff piece about her with soft focus lighting where she talks about how the way people speak of her hurts her feelings without ever discussing the truth of the allegations made against her.

Gailey: that's right Gailey: colonel horatio T. Mchefferbottom III and her royal majesty's 12th airborne hippo division is back in action for a ripping bunch of two-fisted tales of wholesale hippo slaughter Gailey: the swamps will run blood Gailey: there's also romance too

I wrote about a reason not to use generative AI in your writing that I haven't seen anyone talking about. Once I realized this, banning GenAI in our lab's writing became a no-brainer. Feel free to share, I think this is probably useful especially for trainees: www.carlsonlab.bio/thoughts/the...

The only reason you’ll ever need not to write with AI — The Carlson Lab

Over the last year, our lab has been developing a policy on AI use. To do this, we did three main things: We read a lot of academic publications and tech news. We set up an #ai channel on our la...

the reactionaries sort of thought you could just thrust your chest out and slap a bunch of paint and memes on things and recover national pride and a lost era of white male triumph or whatever. how's your national pride now. are you proud yet. are you feeling strong

The moderators of the King George County Community Facebook page took a post about this story down and told me it’s because it is “stirring the pot.” Wouldn’t it be great if everyone on Bluesky saw this story in response to their censorship? www.advocate.com/opinion/king...

These LGBTQ+ Virginia kids found support and community in school. Then, bigoted adults took that away

The hardest thing about growing up queer isn’t being different. It’s what adults like conservatives in King George County do because of it, writes John Casey.
