My Mazda CX-30 does 0-60 in 5.8, has a 250hp turbocharged engine, AWD, enough airbags to refloat the Titanic, and every electronic driving and parking aid known to mankind in 2023 - and a lifetime mileage of 26.5 mpg over 71,842 miles. Stop being nostalgic. Cars have literally never been better.

They tested an 81 Pontiac 1000 (also sold as a Chevy Chevette) and got these great numbers

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net · yesterdayalso, cheap stuff has actually gotten way better quality now. this is a 1985 chevy cavalier. 88hp engine (although it was fuel injected!), and basically no creature comforts [a/c was an option, same with an FM radio]. it would last you maybe 100k miles. It cost the equivalent of $27,000 today.

Market cap of tech companies based in and around there is like $14 trillion and it's full of fucking bungalows? So broken
good old historic palo alto - where they did things like make a park for "palo alto residents only" so that the poors & POC who they'd redlined out of buying homes there wouldn't be able to visit it. & it wasn't until a lawsuit in 2020 that it opened to everyone. such a rich history!

Today I led a cave tour, ordered four animal pelts, processed a special use permit, briefed the deputy chief ranger about our EMS program, and transported a patient 70 miles to the nearest hospital in our ambulance. Specialization is, indeed, for insects.

What is flood-resilient? Not building in 100-year floodplains. What is hurricane-resilient? Not building at sea level in storm surge zones. What is wildfire-resilient? Not building homes surrounded by vegetation that was born to burn. I don't understand why we're unwilling to mitigate risk.

There are a ton of different natural hazards out there and have always existed, they just in the last 30 years have become mroe exaggerated in danger than they were 100 years ago.

Part of Fillmore, Utah (seat of Millard County, our next-door neighbor to White Pine), is being evacuated due to the rapidly-expanding Widemouth 2 Fire.
Discourse sucks so I’m gonna post pictures of my fattest beagle at the fattest stage of his fatness in this thread.
Meanwhile, in Millard County, Utah, the Widemouth 2 Fire more than tripled in size last night to 36,000 acres.
we have spent over a century as a society quietly ignoring things like "one hundred year flood plains" and "are we building a city in the desert" and "it's fine to build houses in fire zones" and now the bill is due
so where we could have had natural areas fronted by parks etc (it used to be orange groves up against the mountains, which did fine) and defensible urban areas, instead there are tendrils going up every canyon and hillside. then you get the Eaton Fire.
a frontier development pattern coming up against a physical reality that it didn't originally have to contend with in a structural way when people first built up into the canyons around LA it was "do so at your own risk," but then they became incorporated into cities

We thought This Couldn’t Happen™ when Paradise burned, when communities West of the Cascades burned during the Labor Day Fires, and now when there is widespread structure loss within city limits. It can happen and will happen again as long as we are beholden to fossil fuels.
My thoughts this morning are with the people seeing their home in a pile of ashes, people who don't yet know their home has burned, and the firefighters, wildland & structure, who kept the NW hellscape last night from being so much worse. #HugAFirefighter #IdahoFire #SpokaneFire #Weiser #BigRock
It's a tough reality for americans to accept. they do love their semi city/semi country vibes. that fire fuel is very aesthetically appealing. until it catches fire.
