Our major new investigation is out today packed full of revelations about the oil and gas industry’s decades-long deception over natural gas. We show how big oil and gas created the myth of “clean” natural gas before deceptively marketing it as a climate solution. @climateintegrity.org

The New York Times reports that our latest investigation — "The Fraud of 'Clean' Natural Gas" — "casts a harsh light on how the oil and gas industry has previously communicated the role of natural gas in global warming." They knew. They lied. And they must be held accountable.

Our new investigation exposes how the oil and gas industry knew about the climate harms of methane yet promoted natural gas as "clean" and a climate solution. "The fraud of clean natural gas has been essential to the industry’s success in the marketplace," the authors write. Learn more 👇

Today’s natural gas-dependent world was not inevitable. Big oil and gas have worked hard to create it for over 50 years, deceiving the public about the climate harms of natural gas. Our report exposes this deception for the 1st time. See ⬇️ for a Dirty Dozen of key investigative findings.

RESOURCE: New @climateintegrity.org investigation shows the fossil fuel industry KNEW FOR DECADES that they were leaking massive amounts of toxic, climate-wrecking methane. But they just kept lying, claiming gas was "clean," a "bridge fuel" and a "climate solution." #ClimateSky #MakePollutersPay 🔌💡

You guys aren't going to believe this, but ... it turns out the oil & gas industry knew that they were poisoning people (in this case, with methane) for years, and they hid it & did nothing to mitigate the harm. No, really, it's true! Incredible investigative work here from @rebleber.bsky.social:

Oil Firms Knew for Decades of Methane’s Danger to Planet, Documents Suggest

The companies knew they were releasing more of the greenhouse gas than they publicly reported, according to industry files cited by the Center for Climate Integrity, an activist organization.

Our new report reveals how gas utilities, pipeline companies, and oil majors like ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, and BP worked together to downplay the impact of methane emissions and sell the myth that natural gas was "clean energy."

Chances are you've heard that methane leaks make natural gas worse for the climate than we've been led to believe. And yet many of us still think of gas as the "clean" fossil fuel. That didn't happen by accident.

A major new investigation out today with new revelations about the oil and gas industry's long-running deception over natural gas. We lay out in new details and documents how big oil and gas manufactured the myth of "clean" natural gas.

This CCI report lays out, for the first time, exactly how the oil & gas industry created and pushed the myth of "clean," climate-friendly natural gas—a myth that persists to this day. This is an INCREDIBLE, meticulously-researched resource for anyone who works on climate.

NEW: Big Oil and Gas created the myth that natural gas is "clean" — despite knowing the health and climate harms of methane decades earlier than previously reported. A major CCI investigation exposes how the gas industry deceived the public and policymakers into believing gas is a climate solution.

New one from me: Fracking billionaire Harold Hamm, aka Trump’s ‘original oil guy,’ spent years downplaying the risks of a war from Iran. Now, he aims to profit from an energy crisis he assured US officials wouldn’t happen. 🔎The long version is @fieldnotes.co : fieldnotes.co/reporting/ha...

How did Trump misjudge the risks of an Iran war so badly? Ask his 'original oil guy, seen here riding in a tank during a trip he took to Israel (where he also met with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu).

I've been thinking a lot lately about this *horrifying* statement by O.H. Skinner, a key architect of the ongoing effort to shield fossil fuel corporations from liability for the effects of climate change, including lethal heat.

Screenshot of a quote from O.H. Skinner, Alliance for Consumers' executive director, reading: "I'm not an expert on these cases, but you're starting to see them. And I think the first one was just filed as a civil case in Oregon based on the heat dome—I still don't know what a heat dome is, but it is apparently a bad thing—where the estate of a person who died sued energy companies claiming that they had caused a climate homicide because the effects of climate change had made the environment in this person's life so unlivable that their death was literally caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Now, we can all sit here and say, 'Oh, the train of causation,' but I think one thing that Justin [Anderson — ExxonMobil's Assistant General Counsel for Litigation] can probably explain in his discussion is, if that's a theory that gets legs, that's just thousands, a million cases over a long enough arc, right? And they don't need— they just need enough of them to slip past a motion to dismiss and start to be like, 'Well, somebody died at 52 instead of 82.' Anybody who's in here and has ever done an insurance litigation case, like, those numbers are gonna get big and they're gonna get big fast."

The heat broiling Europe in recent weeks is thought to have led to thousands of excess deaths, officials say, and is posing an extreme risk of wildfires, which have already burned through parts of Spain, Portugal and France.
