4.5/5. I was SHOCKED how much I liked this movie - what a blast. Classic "they just don't make them like this anymore" action film that also has a lot to say about race & race relations in the South. Great cast, great soundtrack, tons of action, likable characters & the most despicable sheriff ever.

#nowshowing in the Nickxcom theater: Riverbend (1989, Sam Firstenberg) On Blu-ray from @reelblack.bsky.social I was a proud Kickstarter backer of this, & I cannot believe we FINALLY got a physical release. Another lost movie found! Let's fucking GO 💪🏻🍿💪🏻🍿 #filmsky #actionsky #physicalmedia

Riverbend

Away from my hovel so missing films these last few weeks but had some couch time w a reliable fav. The Whedon-isms got even more glaring (dialogue, women, the start of Weaver in mgmt roles, bleh) but the cast is aces (Connolly + Kranz esp) and I cannot resist the meta reveal -> SYSTEM PURGE.

Cabin in the Woods film.

The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson Frankenstein - Mary Shelley The Auctioneer - Joan Samson When Darkness Loves us - Elizabeth Engstrom A Nest of Nightmares - Lisa Tuttle Interview with a Vampire - Ann Rice The Lamb - Lucy Rose Rainbow Black - Maggie Thrash Maeve Fly - CJ Leede 📚🩸

Hey guy readers! Quote this with some books by women and nonbinary authors that you recommend. A few from me: Meg Elison's Book of the Unnamed Midwife R.F. Kuang's Poppy War Caitlin Rozakis's Dreadful Fonda Lee's Jade City Sarah Gailey's Echo Wife Premee Mohamed's Annual Migration of Clouds

Drank from the Hose stories from coworkers hilariously recounting how terrified they were of their fathers and their brand of 'discipline'. Telling those stories and then sighing 'kids these days' really makes me think you just want to hit your kids.

This one's changed plenty, tho it still feels awful, but now I can't unsee the inherit conservatism in serial killer rock stars and the 'transcending' 3rd act is just giving up to RZ's pastiche creep bullshit. Devils without causes save their own appetites, something to celebrate in the early 2000s.

Devil's Rejects film. Also not nearly as funny as I first thought. Newsflash, 25 yr old me was an idiot. Still am.

Cnd backwoods proto-slasher that admits blackflys exist, so already a bad time for dudes being in the moment, not a cell phone in sight. Darkness + dread that's painted thick, genuine hardship as all the comforts get stripped/lost while being hunted, including Hal Holbrook going primal to survive.

Rituals film.

Introduced NIMH to the kids tonight. Totally rapt, as it's absolutely gorgeous, incredibly tense, w some real darkness and depth and just enuff comic relief. The plow scene, Great Owl's lair, the rats hideout beneath the rose bush, the final showdow, just increadible scenes. Bluth is the man.

Secret of NIMH film.

Another 'new director/writer' making something new-ish in '26 that's weirder + lusher beyond what the 'spot the ingredients' reviews told me and a pretty great witchy time, a total car crash of sex, power, retail, hate, and friend dynamics, officiated by Marilyn. Doesn't care what I think, wooo!

Forbidden Fruits film.
