*New paper* Big congratulations to our former MSc student Alexandra Kuttnig for having her thesis published! 🎉 Alex studied how seasonality and grazing exclosures shape bird community dynamics in West African drylands. 🐦🌾🐏🌳 📃 Full paper (incl Alex's beautiful drawings!): doi.org/10.1002/ece3...

Seasonality and Grazing Exclusions Shape Bird Community Dynamics in West African Drylands

Seasonal changes, more than grazing exclusions, shape bird community composition in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. However, grazing exclusions enhanced habitat heterogeneity, supporting regional b...

📦 My new R package {spatialData} is on CRAN! 🎉 Ecological datasets as sf data frames and their companion raster data ready for analysis and modeling. Built as example data for R packages, but great for teaching too! 🔗 blasbenito.github.io/spatialData/ ❗check the Articles section!

spatialData: Cool Spatial Datasets

Provides spatial datasets ready to use for ecological modelling and raster companion data for prediction: Neanderthal presence during the Last Interglacial (Benito et al. 2017 <doi:10.1111/jbi.12845>)...

The thermophilisation rate of plant communities in response to global warming is 5 times faster on alpine summits than in forests or grasslands across 🇪🇺 This finding corroborates former findings on the greater likelihood for upslope than poleward range shifts of plants 🌳🌲☘️🌾🪻🌼 shorturl.at/gc0TJ

Contrasting thermophilization among forests, grasslands and alpine summits - Nature

Analyses of large-scale, multitaxa and long-term thermophilization patterns in forests, grasslands and alpine summits across Europe provide insight into shifts in community composition among different...

Genuine talent doesn't emerge from a vacuum. It results from a massive effort: try, fail, learn, and repeat until failure becomes success, whatever that means. Running the loop for long enough might get you there, hopefully. Offloading the grind to a machine surely won't.

*Job alert* We have a 4-year #PhD position open! The project investigates spreading potential & impact of non-native plant species in mountain ecosystems using fieldwork, experimental & data-driven approaches. Starting date: 04/2026.
