Less than 800 NSF grants awarded over the first half of the fiscal year for the entire country. Previous years were already over 2-3k awards by now. It is not particularly overdramatic to say we are seeing the death of federally funded science research in the United States.

Welcome to the last half of the US federal fiscal year. Here is where we're at with National Science Foundation--the agency that funds basically everything other than biomedical research at American universities--grant numbers. grant-witness.us/funding_curv...

NSF grant curve from link for 2021 through 2026, with each year shown as a different color. By this point in the year, NSF made 3,300 or more grants in 2021-2024 and 2,087 in 2025. This year 737 have been awarded. Both this year and 2025 seem to have an odd slow down about now in the rate of new grants not present in earlier years, in addition to the general lower rates.

“If O’Neill is confirmed as NSF’s director, the Trump administration will further tighten its control over an agency created by Congress to be independent in its work to advance science.” UCS’s Julian Reyes explains why the Senate should work to block this nomination:

Trump’s Nominee to Run NSF is Unqualified, Conflicted, and a Threat to Science

If O’Neill is confirmed as NSF’s director, the Trump administration will further tighten its control over an agency created by Congress to be independent in its work to advance science.

These asshole twerps with no brains or education from DOGE really did use ChatGPT to find NEH grants to terminate ILLEGALLY - ruining hundreds lives and destroying hundreds of the greatest humanities projects and partnerships of our time. I’m overwhelmed with rage and anger all over again.

Huge NYT article on the back story of those two weeks in March/April 2025 when DOGE illegally terminated hundreds of NEH grants. Gift link!! www.nytimes.com/2026/03/07/a...

Let's outlaw scheduling meetings without first. I don't care what my university account calendar says, it's not a reflection of my availability, and even if it was, that doesn't give you the right to commit me to anything without my consent, kthxbye.
