👩‍👩‍👧‍👦 Aloof wife. I make stories. I also like robots, retro technology, plants, music, and various crafts. 📄 https://kami.land 💸 https://ko-fi.com/kamibee/

Spent most of the day looking forward to the evening and apparently all I'm going to do with the evening is gremlin around a quiet house, and you know what brain, you are totally valid for that.

My experience from 20 years or so hanging out around authors online is that if someone does appear to be 'gatekeeping' it's because they're engaging in some kind of illegal, immoral, or abnormal activity you don't want to engage with anyway; regular authors love to overshare about the business.

Seeing complaints online that authors 'gatekeep' information…! Absolute nonsense. There is no industry or craft in the world which is so comprehensively written about, studied, and discussed as fiction writing, and every author I know welcomes new writers who are serious about giving it a go.

The typing practice application I threw together for my kid went off better than I expected! Didn't take any longer to create than it did to conclude the existing options for Linux weren't what we wanted. No chatbots were enslaved in the making of this single user software either. 🤭

A PyGame window titled 'tak tak tak' which contains two rectangles in light and darker grey that sort of look like a greyscale country flag. The top rectangle has 'Hi! It is nice to meet you!' in black somewhat handwriting-esque text on it. The bottom one says 'Hi! It is' in green, and then 'ffddf' in black indicating text that does not match the top text.

"I am drowning in books such that I've barely touched the library book I picked up nearly two weeks ago... well, better buy a couple more ebooks to make sure I don't run out of reading material!" 🥰📚

Not me deciding I can definitely bang up the exact bit of software I want for school before Monday by myself, having now... *checks calendar* half a day. 💀

A lot of the back/leg pain I had in my late twenties/early thirties cleared up substantially when my wife finally made me get a decent pair of shoes rather than endlessly patching up cheap old ones. The only item of clothing I will replace the instant they start to fall apart.

I’m not a doctor. I know nothing. Also? Most of the other problems are because of your feet. Your neck hurt? Your feet. Your hip hikes? It’s your feet. Your shoulder pulls? Your feet. Your jaw pops. Yep, it’s your feet. Maybe. Allegedly.

I only vaguely know Hank Green as one of the Internet guys people of my generation are inexplicably in love with but his present situation really highlights why I think very sincerely that people should not fuck with generative AI even a little bit. It's psychologically corrosive trash.

Accidentally nuked all my saved browser tabs while trying to fix audio problems with my computer and you know what, this is great actually, I am finally free, I know I'm gonna let those pile up again but I should do this at the start of every month. 🤭

Feels like a very me problem to spend a couple hours figuring out how to create a Windows 98 boot floppy with the equipment I have and to then almost lose the resulting disk because I have a bunch of other floppies just lying scattered around the house.

I hate the opinion I keep seeing going around in the general form 'users can tell you if there is a problem but they can't tell you how to fix it'. This sort of attitude is why all the software we need is worse now and those espousing it need to kindly remove their heads from their rectums.

The problem with being too busy to actually work on my book edit is that I start thinking a lot about it, and thinking things like, 'I would like to change how this story ends in a way that will require me to carefully review the entire story again to ensure the timeline still makes sense.' 💀

Got the repaired CD drive installed back in my Aptiva and the repaired case back on, so to celebrate here's a photo of the computer naked. I never bother reposting my own posts because IDGAF if the whole world sees them but I am tempted to repost this sexy shot weekly, just try and stop me.

An IBM Aptiva machine without its distinctive slipcase so that the bare metal frame is visible, and a little bit of the internals through a gap in the front. In the background of the desk it sits on is a wooden tea-warming stand, a hint of Furby, and a couple indistinct photographs of pretty Kpop girls. If you recognise them this will tell you far too much about me as a person.

as a small gadget liker who does not pay attention to who owns what i thought this was a prudent warning to pass on

The chintzy-looking M64 clone console of the N64 by a company named ModRetro has been released, I think, I don't pay attention that closely to shit. But as the great @frankcifaldi.bsky.social posted before, it is our civic duty to push back against this company and shun ANYONE who doesn't.

School was a bit of a bust today but I did manage to accidentally invent the month of Norgust by misspeaking (sore throat is making me even more incoherent than usual). I like the name. Think I'll give it to a fictional emperor or something.

I thought since my kids weren't in daycare they wouldn't pick up biting as a habit. Turns out biting is just something some kids decide to do all on their own. (Yeah I know, no shit Sherlock!) My first never did, which is lucky for his sister because that's just one of the reasons she's the last. 🙀

Hey parents of bsky: What are some theories of parenting you were very confident in right up until you had your own kids?

Getting our daughter a play kitchen seemed like such a funny idea last year but now she's eating there and 'cooking' with her leftovers and what it's become is me staying up until the early hours cleaning TWO kitchens. 🙀

It's so funny how some people get worked up at the idea that they can be blocked on social media and cut off from another user permanently. They want to nerf that ability because of how powerful it is. I actually think it doesn't go far enough and we should do the equivalent to people IRL more too.

Started rereading the Megatokyo comics today for some reason. I think they have a complicated place in the webcomics history of the time but at the same time especially with Piro + collaborators' accompanying blogs, they're a really fascinating capsule of the time they were published.
