I see we're doing "everything is worse" now for Discourse tonight. It's not, but the thing about this argument is that IT DOESN'T MATTER. You cannot pick and choose when you live. You can only live forward. So fix what you can and enjoy what's good instead of pining for when you were a child.

One of the things you get from watching tributes to Glen Hansard is that he was a musician’s musician. His peers really respected him. But also he was so kind to random people. And that seems sort of perfect. To be respected both by the people who deeply understand what you do and those who don’t.

Try to donate blood if you can, the Red Cross is saying there’s a dire shortage. A lot about the present moment can feel truly overwhelming and leave us feeling helpless, but you still have a ton of power in your hands if you choose to use it.
Even 100,000 feels small, less than half the size of anywhere else I’ve lived that wasn’t on this map. Baltimore has gone from a peak of 950,000 in 1950 to closer to 570,000 today but I’m glad to be part of the +750 who arrived in 2024.

So often it feels safer to jaywalk (checking two directions of traffic) than it does to step out in a crosswalk not knowing if anyone coming from 4 different directions will bother to stop.

This right here is why "see, they're doing gender-affirming care!" jokes don't land with me. There's a difference between affirming gender as a spectrum within which people are flexible, and reinforcing gender as a hierarchical binary, even if the means (hormone treatments, surgery) are the same.
