Hey! I can give a few keys of The Abbess Garden (store.steampowered.com/app/3411970/...) if you want to play and don't have the money :) Either by pm for mutuals or contact@mdstudiogames.com 🌸 The game is not expensive, but I know times are tough, and hopefully some time in a garden could help 🌿

There have been some very nice things about moving down South for the last two years. But I do miss normal temperatures. It's cooler this weekend than it has been, and it's still too hot for my planned walk. 20-23 is proper summer, not this endless baking!

‘Star Wars: Star Pilots’ releases in exactly 2 months in the UK (a slightly longer wait for this of you in the US)! The fact that we’re suddenly that close absolutely blows my mind. If you’re interested in or excited by the book then there’s still time to pre-order: geni.us/StarWarsStar...

It's August! This month I have to write two chapters, do article revisions, finish a book section, write two grant apps, and get ready for non-ac job hunting. It's quite tempting to bother with none of the former given the latter (why do all the work if I'm crashing out of academia soon anyway).

I am a bit sad about bsky being much smaller than Old Twitter because of reach. I basically want to say “hey if you know anyone in the Bay Area with a line on funding that isn’t tied up in LLMs (or even just really interesting people!) who I should chat to in the next uhhh few weeks let me know”

"This Game may contain content not appropriate for all ages, or may not be appropriate for viewing at work: Frequent Violence or Gore, General Mature Content" Okay, but what is the Rats situation? More or fewer rats per square metre of rat attack than in the last game? That's what I need to know.

It is always an interesting grammatical challenge working out what tenses to use for games that are not yet out, but will be by the time the chapter being written is published.

Hello! For a potential piece on Eurogamer, I would love to know what cool little things people in and around games are working on. Not full games, but fun, interesting, weird projects or side projects. Things you're noodling around with, things you just think are neat. Replies/reposts very welcome!

Tonight's posting is reminding me how much fun I always thought it would be to run a long module on a hero or two of Greek myth and their reception. Tracing how and more importantly why presentations differ and whether there are limits to what you can do with them.

This week writing my chapter on places where player responses to and developer framings of 'mythological games' blur the history/myth lines. It's proving much trickier to write as a proper argument than it was as a provocative conference paper.

Does anyone happen to have access to the Whitaker's Almanac for 1914, specifically p945? Google Books no longer shows it, and it's not among those I have library access to - but might be accessible for US users of HathiTrust?

Delighted to say that I’m going to be speaking on a panel along with some other excellent academics and developers at AdventureX (a conference I love) The panel is titled “Fact versus Fiction: Creating historical games for a modern audience” - should be a good one!

Question for *The Abbess Garden* players! 🌿 We are working on the encyclopedia update 📖 What question do you have about the game that you would like us to answer? Like "Was it possible for a young peasant in Port-Royal to know how to read in the 17th century?" #indiegame #cozygame

I am enjoying living in Canterbury very much - it's a great city, with loads going on and lots of lovely spaces to spend time in. It is not, however, big enough to have "quarters", and the desperate attempt to rebrand streets of the city as e.g. "creative quarter" are deeply annoying.

As well as the utopian novel being terrible, it's a remarkably odd plan to build a democratic utopia by just murdering a bunch of leading figures until you happen upon the right one who was especially bad and damaging society. (Metaphor Refantazio afternoon here).
