the US profoundly needs a children's rights movement. children are not property... they deserve opportunity and learning and autonomy and security.... and our country just does not acknowledge this

A judge in Vermont has ordered Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk immediately released from ICE detention. Öztürk has been held in a notorious prison in Louisiana. She still faces the threat of deportation, apparently in retaliation for co-authoring a piece for her student newspaper about Gaza.
Judge appears about to order the release of Rümeysa Öztürk!

Me, yesterday: yay, I finished my first year teaching in higher ed. Time to finish up grades so I can take a short break before summer classes My body, this morning: please say hello to a sore throat, headache, and body aches.
@npr.org for every minute spent talking to a non-autistic person about autistic people's needs, you should be giving at least 2x that amount to actually autistic people— & not just in written stories, but on-air. Apply said rubric to any other group under attack right now for their lived realities.
When people break the law, and their actions are righteous and appropriate, we should applaud them. When people abide by or enforce the law, and their actions are repugnant, we should condemn them. We should never pretend the law is a moral dividing line.
An autism "registry" culled from private medical records could potentially violate federal privacy laws and runs the risk of abuse. It also harkens back to a time when disabled people were labeled, segregated, and excluded. We won't go back.
RFK Jr’s autism study collecting Americans’ private medical records
The National Institutes of Health claims it is fulfilling RFK’s promise to find cause of autism by September

In my grad union, we organized an access needs article. It included eliminating required medical documentation. The admin rejected our proposals at every turn. Now, RFK, Jr. wants to create a registry of Autistic people. That required documentation makes people less safe.
Hi friends! A good friend asked me to share this awesome new project— a literary magazine by trans kids, for trans kids, with a little help from trans adults. If you have a trans kid in your life, definitely check out Chrysalis Magazine! www.chrysalismagazine.org
Because it's #EarthDay, I'm resharing my open library Against AI and Its Environmental Harms at: pad.riseup.net/p/Against_AI... Educators, as we consider our work and commitments to our students and their futures, how are we teaching about AI's climate impacts? How are we resisting AI hype? #EduSky
Poor reporter interviewing me about financial aid next year got an earful when they asked if I think anything can be done to stop a disaster from happening. Just me ranting "this isn't the asteroid from Armageddon, this is a self-inflicted wound and we could reverse these illegal firings any day."
It's been three months + 1 day since Elon Musk did a Nazi salute, twice, at the inauguration. If you're still focused on pro-Palestine protestors as a threat to American Jews, then you don't really care about us. If you're still saying that cancel culture by the left is a thing, you're full of it.
I am not a big fan of re-boots but hear me out...

it's important this go as viral as the original story for morale purposes if nothing else. despite the image they project these people are NOT unaccountable. consequences CAN be forced. focused anger and outrage MATTERS.
oh hey welcome to your trial, blackshirts
There are just too many legendary JD Vance memes today to get any serious work done.
At the very least, a Secretary of Defense probably shouldn’t be an incorrigible yapper. Every middle school student only had to learn about “loose lips sink ships” ONCE to be like “it’s time to tighten up!”
Me: Yay! I got a bunch of grading done this weekend. Let's see, what is on the to-do list for tomorrow. Surely, my hard work will make this week a bit less hectic. 😎 :: checks list :: Me: Oh, more grading. A LOT more grading. 🫣
I'm quite comfortable with abolishing deportations and giving every immigrant and refugee a home and food and education and a job and safety, and if you object on the basis that we don't give citizens those things, my answer is simply that we should be giving those things already.
No kings protest in Binghamton NY 🇺🇲 this is what democracy looks like. Love my community in Broome county NY.
A few hundred people in Binghamton came out to today and collectively said no to fascism. Two observations: 1. So many people driving by cheered & honked in solidarity. 2. The crowd skewed older (60+). Legacy media might not cover this, but collective dissent is happening across the country.
While many leaders are failing to meet this moment with active resistance and solidarity, many educators are doing the important work to protect immigrant students, families, and community members.
In this #OpEd, two teachers explain how they're trying to protect and advocate for their students.

Van Hollen’s trip to El Salvador is a form of embodied protest and helped put Trump’s illegal deportation of Abrego Gracia on the front page of the NYT two days in a row. As Bayard Rustin once said, “The only weapons we have are our bodies, and we need to tuck them in places so wheels don't turn.”
