INSIDE HEALTH CANADA'S 180 ON SAFE SUPPLY When the Fifth Estate ran a story last November on two expert reports that should have informed regulated opioid policy, the feds were ready for a media storm. It never came. Instead, Health Canada held fast to a "low-profile communication" strategy. 1/

The Edmonton Police Commission is completely out of line here. Clearly this is an issue that matters to many Edmontonians. Preventing them from speaking to the body that’s supposed to represent them and hear their concerns is undemocratic. 🧵/1

A must read. Michael Bueckert, the VP of the advocacy group Canadians for Justice & Peace in the Middle East, said Driechel’s itinerary was “much worse than any of us expected.” Edmonton Police Chief Driechel & @YEG_Commission Chair Henderson must resign. www.readtheorchard.org/p/scoop-edmo...

Warren Driechel also met with members from an undercover unit that less than three months earlier executed two unarmed men in Jenin after they had surrendered.

I am concerned that Ben Henderson, the chair of the Edmonton Police Commission thought that it was acceptable to unilaterally approve Chief Warren Driechel's participation in this trip to Israel.

I was a commissioner with the Calgary Police Commission when this situation unfolded. Calgary Police Service weren't regulars in the use of the gear deployed in this case. Most CPS members took the packaging & wrap off their shield during the violent conflict in Falconridge in September 2023. 1/

🧵 Why are we suing the Calgary Police? It’s hard to describe what happens to you physiologically while being smeared in public by powerful people. It’s a mix of uncertainty, fear, frustration, rage, indignation, and anguish, on a thick layer of pity — for self and others you know are in it, too. 1/

Canada has little control of its police. The lack of accountability is very similar to elsewhere. The police call efforts to oversee them: micromanagement or politicizing policing. All policing is political, the only question is who are making the decisions of the who, how, what of policing.
