My late mother dealt with this in Burlington, ON for years. As a nurse in orthopaedics & general surgery patients needed nursing care. Patients who refused care from my mother, a Black woman, who have their desires charted & would be left without nursing care for up to 8 hours (an entire shift). 1/

I was happy to stop by the picket line at YYC and proud to stand with the flight attendants. I was also lucky to be there at the same time as their incredible president, Alia Hussain, and the bargaining committee. They are working hard to get a fair deal!

A lot of people don’t know this. I write about this in my Public Finance text about inequality and reparations. It is interesting how much student’s thinking changes when you add the tidbit about the original compensation (and the origin of unpaid internships that followed abolition)

Of course, the formerly enslaved population received no compensation. Money received by those who fought against the Slavery Abolition Act. 2/
