As I've said before, it's not left vs right, it's up vs down.

This is why you will sometimes see me hum and haw on the topic of "Is it a good game?" and answer with something like "It can be MADE good!"
In the world of RPGs, "don't play the rules as written" as an answer to problems experienced in play is a bit like "This Bestheda game is great, oh, you're not playing with these 37 mods that's why you're not having fun, you should have known better". 😬

EVERY 5 FEET?! Has anyone on the design team ever climbed ANYTHING? You're telling me I'm making 2 checks every time I climb a ladder up to the hay loft? The DC may be low, but I don't think I've EVER failed that check. I wish there was some kind of "assumed competence" going on in these games.
Read the climb skill: roll for every 5 feet. On a critical, you fall, losing progress. You are climbing up but randomly get tossed back down, the snakes in snakes & ladders. It's the most literal example in the game but there's a lot of them, essentially everywhere.
Four itsy-bitsy, ultra-teensy, super-cutie SNAILS! It's been rainy off and on and I found these little enbies crawling around on a wooden board. Twenty-five cent piece for scale. #Snails

dungeon as setting archetype is fascinating to me bc the genre trappings bore me, but strip those back and its the BEST! A haunted house, an abandoned mall, a secluded hotel: all dungeons! Any connected series of rooms that are thematically aligned & demand exploration — thats ALL THE BEST PLACES
I've been silent recently, as there's a lot of stuff going on (not the "good" kind, sadly). Anyway, here's a free version of Voidlight for y'all to enjoy. If you like it, buy the full game and support a friendly indie designer who's going through a rough patch. ❤️ hope you like it

I laughed out quite loud at this one!
When I was first designing our Larp I had a friend ask me "Well what if they don't read the rules?" and it's like.. well.. that's.. I can't fucking help them can I!? I am not designing this game for those people, what's the fucking point!?
You cannot design away bad players in a tabletop rpg. You cannot build enough guard rails to stop bad faith play. The only rule that helps is, "Play With Better People." Because those guard rails suck for every good faith player that has to bump into them, design for the people who WANT to PLAY.

Do you love any of the games that I have created? Whether it's Monsterhearts, Dream Askew, The Quiet Year, Going For Broke, or a deeper cut, now would be a great time to hit quote-tweet and tell your friends about it! It's been a slow month. 💕✨ store.buriedwithoutceremony.com

We’re going to hear about how everyone loved Dolly, and that feels true. But it’s good to remember, and to her credit, that she was attacked for her AIDS activism, her vaccine advocacy, her LGBTQ+ support and even, more recently, for her reading initiatives. She ALWAYS stood firm when it mattered.
When we hate on these disgusting immoral evil billionaires it’s bc just look at everything Dolly did. They could be doing that. They could just be helping people and every day they choose not to help people. They choose to harm. And when they die, we’ll dance and laugh and be thankful they’re gone.
This is the letter kids got at the end of Dolly’s Imagination Library. I defy you to read this and not cry.

Have we reached the AI singularity?
Tech bigwigs like Sam Altman and Elon Musk say yes. Not everyone agrees.

I got nothing.
When we returned from six months in Europe, my 12-year-old had a reunion planned with her "home" friends before their Graduation Ball. Her demand towards any parents involved: "No videos or pictures, this is a private, emotional experience just for us." And I thought, "Damn, she really gets it."
Part of treating children as human beings means simply reminding yourself that the younger version of you would have hated to have been surveilled 24/7, and that your sense of self is formed in part through privacy from others. We parent well when we let our children find themselves.
[A human expert speaks expertly] - I don't trust them, they might have a hidden agenda! [An AI chatbot speaks expertly] - Of course I trust this, how could it have a hidden agenda? There's an incredible diminishing in critical thinking and reflection going on which benefits a very rarefied few.

I’m never gonna get over how people can have played one (1) ttrpg (and that game is D&D) and yet speak so confidently about how ttrpgs work. do people do this in other forms?? do people play one video game and then insist their experience encompasses every possibility?
