Wendy syndrome: It’s that time of year when students are moving on from the lab—research assistants starting their PhDs, graduate students finishing theirs—and new students are joining. Somehow the students stay the same age, while I keep growing up.
Reviewing page proofs for a manuscript in press at journal X. The editor asks me to add the issue and page number to a reference. Said reference has not yet been assigned to an issue, which the editor should know because the paper is in press at…the very same journal X. 🧪
I am at the HiTOP conference awaiting said radar plots. @hitop-system.bsky.social

Come on, @nytimes.com. You can print 2k words (w/o a single hyperlink to a scientific study) saying psych meds are overprescribed, hitting all the beats you'd expect in a B- student paper (Szasz, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest) without one mention of psychotherapy? www.nytimes.com/2026/05/15/m...
🤔Wait... What happened to that US Research funding line? Seemed like it was almost parallel to China, and then something weird happened recently? What happened recently? You can't do science if you fire the scientist, cut their funding, put anti-scientists in charge, and put your energy into hate.
“They realized, well, that was a mistake,” said Sheriff Sam Hulse of Bonneville County, a Republican. “You started seeing deaths occurring in the community. We started seeing the numbers in the crisis system rise. The very thing we told them would happen was beginning to happen.”

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers. The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. 🧵👇

The US Congress rejected sweeping cuts to science agencies. But the NIH, the NSF and NASA have had their spending slowed.

'Tis the season (for collider bias)! Check out Michel's very nice simulation and explanation of why you shouldn't pull your kid out of varsity chess club just yet.
This smells distinctly like collider bias and/or selection bias and/or regression to the mean... You simply can't select teen prodigies, and world class athletes rom databases, and go run regressions without serious consideration of the selection process!
And if you're interested in this kind of work and looking for a postdoc position, we are hiring! Please see the ad on my website, linked from my bio.

#ThisWeekInNPP Inconsistent clinical associations of bipolar disorder (BP) polygenic risk score (PRS) largely reflect collider bias from case- & treatment-based sampling, which distorts correlations between scores & alters BP-PRS links to outcomes 🧠🧬 / @kgjonas.bsky.social

Oh, I've been hitting the imaginary brake pedal since Spring.
If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow. The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.
