On November 7, The Mark Twain House & Museum will bring together writers, editors, scholars, journalists, and educators for Creative Writing in the Age of AI, a day of conversation about creativity, authorship, copyright, education, and the future of the written word marktwainaward.org/ai-symposium

Elite universities mea culpas about the “loss of trust” in higher education so often fail to consider the force of the longterm propagandistic attack on universities, given extensive play in conservative media, that long preceded Trump, but which he has massively accelerated.

You know that thing people suggest where we make the SC justices ride circuit again? I want every still-living president of the AHA for the past 20 years to have to teach a year in a community college and then spend the summer working for me at the museum.

The real "administrative bloat" in education is the money that schools are being forced to fork over to tech vendors that can just keep jacking up their prices year after year, because it would cost even more to rebuild the systems and retrain the people that were built/trained on that tech.
Of course, there's basically 0 chance that the cost of ChatGPT for all stays at $13M/yr. The whole ed tech model is to offer an initial price that's ridiculously low, get schools hooked (ie, by helping them embed the new tech in all their systems), then jack up the price for contracts long-term. 3/

"For millions of Chinese readers, Walden is no longer simply a nineteenth-century American book about going to the woods. It has become a twenty-first-century survival strategy." Fascinating. lithub.com/why-thoreau-...
Why Thoreau and Walden Resonate With Chinese Youth
When I translated Walden in 2012, I was not a Thoreau scholar. I was an immigrant chasing the American dream: two kids, two cars, two houses, a long commute to a corporate job. Translating Walden b…

He was appalled by the examination system, when it was explained to him, he could not imagine a greater deterrent to the natural wish to learn than this pattern of cramming in information and disgorging it on demand.
"In their seminal book Life After Cars, journalists Aaron Naparstek, Doug Gordon and Sarah Goodyear write that the noise, pollution, and epidemic of violent death brought to our streets by cars have become so ubiquitous that we no longer even notice them."
Opinion: Cars are the biggest threat on the road, not kids on e-scooters
All the outrage we feel about teens weaving on e-bikes and scooters would be better spent figuring out how to keep massive motorized vehicles away from all other road users
