My Filipina mother never says the word “rat”, “mouse”, or “rodent” in whatever language (English, Tagalog, Spanish, Cebuano, etc.). She always spells the word out or says “amigos” or “mga kaibigan”, both meaning “friends”. They supposedly overhear and get upset when they are called what they are.
