For Rio, Tropa de Elite is a nutso film (cannot imagine another country where the most popular film and box office smash features a twenty minute discussion of Foucault) that is worth grappling with. There are many more Rio set films that are amazing but I imagine that will spark good debate.

For Lisbon, the extraordinary films of Pedro Costa are revelatory- the trilogy Ossos, No quarto de Vanda and Juventude em Marcha all explore the city’s Fontainhas neighborhood, a now demolished shanty town that was home to the city’s African origin population, itself a legacy of colonialism.

If you are interested in the global south I really recommend the Calcutta trilogies of Satuajit Ray and/or Mrinal Sen. useful to put them into conversation too since the latter is often a sharp Marxist critique of the liberal humanism of the former.

academic friends and colleagues: I'll teach a new course next semester as part of our Urban Studies programme: Imagining the City, which I want to give it as a survey of urban imaginaries across space and time. Any recommendations re: cultural representations, (re)productions of/in cities? +

I don't want to make civic arguments about history. I don't want to make instrumentalist arguments about history. I want engineers to understand my discipline is rigorous too and if not I want to be able to make fun of them forever because no historian ever built a bridge that broke in the wind.

Gaia Giuliani’s Keynote “Monsters, catastrophes and the Anthropocene. For a postcolonial critique of violent bio- and necropolitics” #ESEH2025 Giuliani is not shying away from topics like Palestine and Ukraine. People left the room when she started talking about Palestine and showed this slide

Birer birer eksileceğimizi sandınız ama biz milyon milyon büyüyoruz! Bu kadar kolay mı sanıyorsunuz? Bu şahsi bir mesele diye mi düşünüyorsunuz? Bu büyük bir milletin yürüyüşüdür. Elinizden geleni ardınıza koymayın. Artık korku duvarları yıkıldı.

Küpe takan erkek, saçını kısa kestiren kadın, el ele tutuşan aynı cinsiyetten iki arkadaş… Türk Ceza Kanunu’nda yapılması planlanan yeni değişikliklerle bunların hepsi suç kapsamına girebilir. Taslak, yalnızca LGBTİ+leri değil, herkesi ilgilendiriyor. Hukukçu Fulya Eroğlu yazdı:
