Previously only available as a weird (tape-to-disk?) warez compilation with multiple games on one disk, enix's Magic Garden (PC88 disk ver) has now been properly preserved: archive.org/details/magi... no working crack patch was found, so the D88 was cracked by hand courtesy of the amazing Alpharobo😸

got some pretty gross looking ランクB games in my latest batch, but they all look to be cheap titles, whereas my expensive rank b's look pristine af, so idk. maybe the condition isn't really random, but skews "idgaf" for cheap games, and "just a tiny bit worse than perfect" for expensive ones 🤷‍♀️

Can I shout into my megaphone that this is a Pretty Big Deal for legal, by-the-book game preservation? Japanese legislation handling abandoned/orphaned IPs, called the「未管理著作物裁定制度」, recently saw revisions this fiscal year. Having an actual case regarding a video game sets some promising precedent.

Interesting stuff here: GPS has received an ok to rerelease an old game that's considered basically "legal abandonware" (my words) under this new system. However, digging deep into the filing (literally the last sentence, haha), the number of downloads will apparently be capped to 100 total.

one piece of information missing from this, which i'm super curious about but failed to find, is how far GPS got in this process while the rightsholder was awol. did the creator come aboard at some point, and give a go-ahead, after negotiating a revenue share? or did GPS get this far with no input -

The PC-88/PC-98 were a Cambrian Explosion of sorts for a range of gameplay and design innovations that found their way to consoles in the mid-90s. many of these games were either straight-up H or dubiously-SFW (see: Doukyuusei, YU-NO, Princess Maker, later on Shizuku and ToHeart, the list goes on)
