reading a book about china. apparently the government there has sent federal forces into cities, taken shares of major private enterprises, slapped tariffs on industries, and pressured media outlets to fire people they politically disagreed with. didn’t know this.

This 4th, I can’t stop thinking about how many lives will be hurt by Trump’s catastrophic bill. But I’m also thinking about the incredible ways people stand with, protect, and serve their communities. The most patriotic thing we can do today is help our neighbor. It’s more important now than ever.

This bill is going to harm millions of Americans right now but we won’t know the true toll for years. It’s time for Democratic leaders, donors, and organizations to use their dollars to fill the gaps Trump is creating: fund clinics, stock food banks, protect communities.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow

As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

Schumer’s answer is bad in various ways, among them: - there is as yet no charge or even official statement that Khalil broke any law - not all violations of the law are deportable offenses - the assault on the 1st amendment and widely-reported, grave due process violations deserve mention

Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats have a post up saying ‘Free Mahmoud Khalil’ while Chuck Schumer, leader of the Senate Dems, from New York!, can’t bring himself to condemn the detention of Khalil. Shameful.

My quick fix for social media is duration caps. Allowing content to be longer increases the likelihood that it will be annoying or evil. Twitter with character limits? Good. Vine with 6 second videos? Good. Remove these guardrails and you get only Digital Filth

I can’t get over how much the MAGA people who pretend to love America actually hate everything about it. They hate the people, they hate the freedom of speech and assembly, they hate free elections, they hate the idea of the people governing ourselves. They aren’t patriots.

"New Yorkers are looking to us, to their leaders for courage and conviction and what they are finding instead is collaboration." Mamdani is a NYS Assemblyman representing Astoria who is running for NYC mayor.

Wow. Watch this from Zohran Mamdani. It looks like the exact "fight" and "conviction" people are hopelessly asking for from the people in charge of the Democratic party:
