duuuuuuuuuude i just shot 16mm film on a 90 year old mechanical movie camera, and developed and scanned it in the same day. I AM SO PUMPED LOL LOOK AT THIS (this is a 4 foot test strip of film i took at multnomah falls around 10am)

You’re mining for banana-shaped gems that contain energy derived from the light of the divine. Yeah, it’s weird. But why aren’t you asking Donkey Kong about the time he punched the fucking moon? That moon, right up there. The night the tides went haywire and EVERYONE THOUGHT THE WORLD WAS ENDING.

A Prospector Monkey talks to Donkey Kong (dressed in mining gear) on an exterior ledge overlooking Ingot Isle’s Baboomtown before it gets pushed into Sublayer 10. A full moon shines brightly from the night sky above. Screenshot from Donkey Kong Bananza.

Friday's my birthday, so let's do something: An art contest! With a twist! I want to encourage you to give art a go, especially these days, and especially you don't think of yourself as an "artist", so there are prizes just for "non-artists." This is an excuse to try out something out just for fun.

Birthday art learning competition!

Prize:
A hand-drawn avatar/token of your OC.
2+ winners:
1+ new/beginner artists.
1 experienced artist.
Extra winners if we get a lot of entries.

Rules:

Read the submission guide in this post

No genAI (you will get blocked)Submission/entry guidelines

You can submit anything you like, but it must be made by you, during the submission period.
To enter, simply post your art in a reply to this bluesky post.
Write in your reply if you’re a new/beginner artist, or an experienced artist.
(Don’t stress over definitions. If you don’t think of yourself as an hobby or professional artist, write “beginner”)
If you have reference art of your OC (for the prize), include that with your reply.
Submissions close at the end of Sunday 8th November 2026

The aim of the competition is to try out something new, not to make something perfect, so:

You don’t need to spend a long time on your art. 30-60 mins is a good target.
Any media is fine, use whatever you already have access to.
Unsure what to draw? check the “suggestions” in this post.

For established artists, try to experiment and do something outside of your comfort zone.
(You could try swapping between digital/physical media, or trying a medium you don’t normally use.)Suggestions/ideas

If you have an Original Character that you want to use for the prize, but no existing art of them, try drawing them as your submission.
Fanart of one of your favourite characters from media/comics/video games.
Still life, (e.g. an interesting thing from your home.)
Pets! (they are also an interesting thing from your home.)
It’s my birthday, so if you want to draw my OC (Konsi) I’d love that. (References in replies.)

For established artists, why not make something that’s been on your to-do list for too long?

Tips for new artists

Pencil/paper is a very beginner friendly medium, and even cheap pencil/paper works well. (Scanning art is nice, but if you don’t have access to a scanner, you can just take a photo to submit your art.)
Use visual references! Spend 50% of your time studying your subject and 50% drawing.
Draw as big as you can easily manage, it makes your mistakes smaller.
Draw something you like (you’re going to be looking at it a lot!)

Forgot how annoying the yetis are in Ratchet and Clank Going Commando So annoying that Insomniac made an award called The Snowbeast Award given to the dev responsible for the "worst thing" in a finished game.
