Nonfiction editor at Penguin Random House. I put the chic in Chicago Manual of Style.

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Jaya rules, and Ravenous rules! This is such a vivid example of how generative AI does not "democratize" art and culture like its boosters claim. It actually increases the need for/impulse towards gatekeeping because in practice, AI just democratizes fraud. Actual work still takes time and skill!

I wrote about Ravenous preparing to commission freelance (yayy!!!) and realizing that means having to plan for AI scams (boooooo) www.weareravenous.com/ai-freelance...

The president took on a vanity project, gave no-bid contracts to contractors who screwed it up, made up a story about vandals to cover it up, and then fomented a felony prosecution against an innocent scapegoat. You could impeach for anything he's done but "This asshole is out of control" is a layup

When you slow down and think about it you realize it's ten times worse than it seems. Sure it's farcical, but it's also a brutal legal attack on a man they knew to be innocent, done to distract from their own thievery and incompetence and as a flex to terrify anyone who might make them look bad.

💯💯💯Yes, you can point to elements of the modern world that are more complex, but you can also point to elements that are simpler. At no point did humans experience the world as simple and easy. There is no such thing as "simpler times," just "times you don't know all the details of."

To put it in a way that may get at people's slowness to realize or reluctance to accept this: the past was not simpler than the present in any general sense, nor were people in the past less complex. They did not all think similarly. Assuming otherwise is not historical thinking, merely nostalgia.

“Ultimately, Magic Mike XXL isn’t a hero’s journey, because it doesn’t believe in heroes... Instead of heroes, sexy dancing. Instead of telling the story of why the king is the king, sexy dancing” How have we had weeks of Odyssey discourse without citing this @hellafitzgerald.bsky.social banger?

Magic Mike XXL Is Basically "The Odyssey," But With Butts - Electric Literature

The quintessential stripper road trip film both follows and transcends Joseph Campbell’s traditional Hero’s Journey
