shorter NCTE message: we want to get rid of all the infrastructure that costs money and carries any political risk, BUT we will take your membership money. For what? Isn't it exciting that we don't know?!!!

Feels like a good time to share my most recent (open access!) publication: “many [participants] see state DEI bans as a warning shot of sorts, a preface to the larger project of dismantling higher education.” publicationsncte.org/content/jour...

It’s hard not to see NCTE’s decision to de-charter CCCC as particularly disastrous as attacks on academic freedom and shared governance escalate. Conservative politicians across the country have successfully exerted more and more control over curricula at universities across the country.

It's a cold and nasty little piece of PR speak. NCTE "acknowledges the communications it has received"—tell us how many emails, come on, tell us. "For many years"—77 years, you cowards. "In recent years, however, CCCC has struggled with its fiscal sustainability"—show us the numbers, please.

@ncte.org is wimpy as hell. but thanks for "acknowledging" (ignoring) our communications and dissolving our "special topics conference" (the largest professional org for writing studies) that has been happening for "many years" (literally 77!!!!)... wish y'all asked us to help write that lazy letter

If there’s no 2027 CCCC I’d be happy to watch recordings of 5-7 presentations and write feedback for each one. Especially for grad students. I usually go to like 7ish sessions (maybe more?) so would be similar kind of deal #teamrhetoric

The CCCC Exec Committee released a brief statement on the NCTE’s intention to dissolve CCCC. "CCCC is the professional home for thousands of scholars, teachers, and researchers...with a decades-long record of shaping how writing is taught, studied, and understood."

This is a very writing studies-centered skeet, but… the way that some in the field are tying themselves into knots to advocate for some “ethical uses” of GenAI really emphasizes the field’s shallow investment in anything like “justice” or “decolonization” or “abolition.”

Everyday there’s some new report that AI is further consolidating wealth and control, procuring energy development and steering energy policy, and using non-transparent and non-consensual training data. And university admins are like “make sure your students are ethical users of AI” 🤠

Told my staff yesterday that unless my fundraiser in NYC in two weeks does stellar AND a grant I was told was coming in May actually shows (we are sitting at about a 50/50 on it) we are looking at shutting end of May. With no severance. So that’s fun.
