Finally getting to the San Francisco Examiner article by Karl Von Herrmann, dated August 28, 1905. It's a bit much to clip, plus there's artwork by sportswriter and cartoonist Hype Igoe, so I'll try linking to it. I don't think we've seen a piece of spirits journalism like this, before or since.

Von Herrman was a journalist, who turns up working in Boston around 1900. He was also involved in theater.

The diarrhea lettuce company, Taylor Farms, uses slave labor contracted from the Arizona Dept. of Corrections. The backbreaking labor is often performed by imprisoned Mexican nationals who would be otherwise ineligble to work in the US. They are paid $1.50 an hour.

The earliest mention of the Blackthorn Cocktail comes to us from the New York Herald, November 21, 1897, where it is attributed to Charley Mahoney, head bartender of the Hoffman House Grill Room in Manhattan. According to this, Mahoney's Blackthorn was sloe gin, sweet Torino vermouth and Ango.

There are three other cocktails with are the products of the fertile imagination of the high card of the Hoffman grill room. One of these he calls the Marguerite, and it certainly is a flower production in its effects on the lucky consumers. Plymouth gin and French vermouth are used in equal parts, and orange bitters complete the entrancer. The Blackthorn cocktail is made of "slow gin,"which, you know, is a liquor, and Italian vermouth, with the addition of a dash of Angostura bitters. This is a very popular drink, as might be surmised by an inspection of its component parts. The Banjo cocktail a la Brooks is a drink against which the most uncompromising total abstainer would urge no possible objection. It is served in a long glass, and is simply lemon soda with a dash of raspberry and a piece of lemon peel.
