Novelist & scriptwriter. HMS Erebus nerd, Branwell Brontë enthusiast. Welsh. Half agony, half hopeless. "For All This Time" coming from PMJ Books, 2027.

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

She’s found a tab for just the intro of Ghost’s He Is. She can do neither hammer-ons nor pull-offs but she definitely knows what it’s supposed to sound like and she’s going in. Pretty confident that faint sound you’re about to hear carried on the breeze is Swedish laughter.

In unexpected guitar news, I’ve just taught my husband to play Em because he wandered in while I was practicing. (He very quickly handed the guitar back and skedaddled)

Remember to be kind to yourself today. You can be evil to yourself tomorrow. On Wednesday you should be kind to ducks. On Thursday the ducks will be evil to you, so watch out for that

You will have to prise my em-dashes from my cold, dead hands. I won’t give up a single thing available to me in the toolbox I’ve built as a writer just because of a glorified pocket calculator and its acolytes.

Em-dashes are a gift to writers who value rhythm and tempo in their writing, and who like to sweep the reader up in a continuous stream of thought. Quitting them because of AI is very much a Michael Bolton "Why should I change? He's the one who sucks" situation.

I'm just saying this now: there are going to be A LOT of em-dashes in my book. It's not because of AI. It's because I am addicted to using em-dashes. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/10/b...

Continuing the series of “films I wasn’t allowed to watch growing up, but I realised I’m an adult now and can watch whatever I want” with A Nightmare on Elm Street. The perfect conceit for a horror film. I applauded several times.

Spotted this morning in town, the happiest seagull in all of Bath, waddling away from the outdoor seating area of a cafe with *half a baguette* in its beak. I didn’t even know seagulls could look smug but

I know I have quite a small reach on here but is there anyone on here who is a Doctor Who fan based in the South West? I have a lot of old stuff from my childhood and I’m looking to downsize, would like to pass as much of it onto a loving home if possible

Shout out to the team at The Perfumer’s Story, who have just had to deal with me being an idiot who apparently can’t read, and who have been absolute pros about it. Total stars.

SOMEHOW I just played an F on the acoustic. Can I do it again? No. Did I absolutely manage it once? Yes. Did I cackle like a loon? Very much so. Will I ever be able to repeat it? Unsure.

What I want this to be is basically every shitty gothic novel ever published and I mean starting with the Castle of Otranto and 4000 copies of The Monk. I want the well poisoned with sinister cowled figures and shrieking heroines. I want every ChatGPT request to spit out amphibians.

New from 404 Media: a company is selling tons of old books specifically to AI companies and says they have a strong NDA to never reveal which AI company bought all of the books. They don't want headlines of 'we scanned and destroyed millions of books for AI' www.404media.co/ai-companies...

If Sov AI is going to continue investing UK taxpayers' money in AI companies, it is imperative that it introduces simple due diligence into whether companies exploit creatives' work without permission. 9/10
