For all that the media has spent years freaking out about what social media does to our brains, I don’t understand why there appears to be little effort to grapple with the fact that these chatbots are, for some not insignificant portion of the population, literally psychosis machines

this is just basic psychological self defense. ads - not all ads, but many ads - want to make you FEEL BAD. they want to create in you a feeling of loss, a feeling of absence, that they can promise to fill with their product. don’t let them! turn that shit off the moment it comes on.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

this is some evil shit they're doing. I know they hire some good people and still do a lot of genuinely great journalism but when they produce this kind of sick propaganda and mix it in with genuine news it undermines anything positive they might be producing. They simply can't be trusted.
