I worked for New York’s largest medical center at the start of the pandemic. There were morgue trucks on the streets. They set up emergency medical tents in Central Park. Healthcare worker colleagues died. It is horrific that RFK Jr is on national TV lying that ICUs were empty.

A travesty. Springer Nature offloads SciAm—the most storied science magazine in the US—onto a content mill consortium, LabX, during an almost certainly successful union vote. LabX now says it will lay off 15 people, over 1/3rd of the unit and 60% of the bargaining committee. Pure union busting.

Got an interesting email today from FedEx, retroactively charging tariffs on a package I ordered in December that's already delivered. Since the Supreme Court overturned IEEPA tariffs, and FedEx is suing to get its own money back, is there actually any legal basis for them to bill for this?

Lots of previously unreported allegations in the lawsuit, including how NOAA also terminated a cooperative agreement with UCAR at the same time as the NCAR news, and how NSF demanded individual cost accounting for every UCAR employee that attended AMS with only 6 days to turn it around.

In testimony on a journalism funding bill, a Carpenter Media representative reveals that the company that owns the largest share of newspapers in Oregon employs 60 journalists. Before Carpenter bought them, the Pamplin chain employed 110 people and EO 185, though not all were journalists.

For Carpenter Media’s nearly 60 journalists across Oregon, this legislation provides something invaluable: the possibility of a sustainable career in community journalism — something increasingly difficult in a marketplace dominated by a company like Google.
