A few hot takes on the letter, which I will refer to as Compact 2.0: 0) I appreciate the shift from outright extortion to (theoretically) open-ended questions. 1) Nevertheless, both the framing of the questions and wording of several rest on a thin evidence base and unexamined assumptions.

Incredibly excited to announce our major collaboration with @airwars.bsky.social! "Anatomy of an AI Kill Chain" is a visual investigation breaking down how AI is transforming every aspect of war. In turn, human oversight and accountability is steadily disappearing.

Anatomy of an AI Kill Chain A visual project from Airwars and @ainowinstitute.bsky.social breaks down how artificial intelligence is transforming every aspect of war - and how militaries are offloading life and death decisions to flawed technologies ai-killchain.airwars.org

"don't make enough money" is a fig leaf All those degree programs--social work, art, etc.--have disproportionately female student bodies. This is designed to make it harder for women to attend college--college education being a key factor in women's autonomy from men & left-leaning voting pattern.

President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/aaAEu6v

Faculty senates passed mutual academic defense compacts and resolutions to reject the loyalty compacts. AAU presidents rolled their eyes. Now AAU is engaging in active betrayal and every institution that does not call to censure AAU leadership must be deemed complicit. Unionize and join @aaup.org

The letter, which was reviewed by Bloomberg News, asks schools to publicly pledge to make sweeping changes that include reexamining admissions practices, hiring more conservative faculty, cracking down on student protests, combating grade inflation, reducing foreign donations and lowering tuition. In contrast, the administration’s latest move was developed in partnership with university leaders, primarily the Association of American Universities, which represents dozens of top research institutions including all eight Ivy League colleges.
AAU’s president, Barbara Snyder, described the letter as a kind of olive branch. She told Bloomberg that the administration’s outreach opened communication channels between university leaders and the White House that have been largely shut since Trump launched his pressure campaign last year. She plans to call on member colleges to support the initiative.

My lord at this point it’s either incompetence or collusion. any university president who thinks they can “work” with the Trump regime lacks fitness for the job.

The public is internalizing that "AI" writing is associated with lower quality. A publisher recently pulled a book contract due to alleged use. Here we see a liar's dividend, in which false allegations are used to protect rapists. We know they're false because Kat exudes integrity in all her work.

So I woke up this morning to find out that Ozzy Osbourne’s son made a video falsely accusing me of using AI to write a Rolling Stone article about the Tate brothers.

We're in the era of incompetence & cybercrimes headlined as "unprecedented model capabilities gone rogue." So OpenAI & Anthropic are trying to one up each other with such incompetence because the "press release as a service" performing media & clueless politicians parrot pre IPO CEO talking points.

Bargaining gets results! Not only is this a serious labor issue, this agreement is saving the reputation and epistemic integrity of ProPublica from the worst impulses of management. This dynamic applies to so many institutions, and the clock is ticking to organize and win bargaining agreements.

"There's an extreme, radical, right-wing agenda coming out of the federal government targeting higher education. The AAUP won’t exist in an ivory tower and wait for politics to be done to its members. That’s not the AAUP of 2026." – Todd Wolfson, AAUP President

AAUP Embraces Political Role With Candidate Endorsements

The group says the move is a first in its over-100-year existence, and part of countering government threats. Critics say AAUP has lost its neutrality.

While faculty and students experience nausea at betrayals like this, administrators at public and private universities across the country are experiencing an insatiable urge to do the same. It is only through broad-base solidarity and organizing that we can mitigate these destructive impulses.
