FYI that this year's Gen Con Writers Symposium has been the best and most diverse conference in years, with writers and readers packing panels and workshops. Props to @mauricebroaddus.bsky.social and the GCWS staff for doing such amazing work! 3/

When you’re reading a romance involving Fae bargains and you start to hear a sweet little distant melody chiming through the air… Then you realize it’s an ice-cream truck. Then you remember you live on a side street backed up against the woods and have never once seen an ice-cream truck here.

We survived GenCon Writers Symposium 2026, y’all (and that’s saying something considering the occasional tornado). I was so busy running around I barely got to enjoy it. Luckily, my interns and friends made sure to slow me down to experience what we were curating.

i think about form size a lot, bouncing between epic fantasy series and standalones, short stories, and novellas. generally, i’m pretty disinterested in the categories themselves, but i’m interested in using the space well, to best effect. so how do you write a good story at any length?

anyone have any favorite resources about writing a novella (vs a novel)—like what makes a good novella, what uses the form well, etc? I've READ plenty of them but if you asked me what the difference is between one and a novel I would still just say "they're shorter" even though I know there's more.

The fact that J.K. Rowling successfully bullied Amnesty International into taking down a report that accurately called out her attack on trans people, especially trans women, is so repulsive and such a display of the power of her money, and her choice to put her vast fortune behind persecution.
