What a duplex rebuild on Laurel Avenue says about independent building in Saint Paul.

Great piece by @sustainstpaul.bsky.social's Ben Quam.
"Saint Paul has progressive, liberal values, but for us to truly be a welcoming and affordable city, we must build enough housing so working-class people can afford to live here."🏘️📈💵 On how a lack of housing hurts affordability and our working poor - our new article below!🧵
My heart goes out to friends and family of Ricki Allan Larson, as well as all who were involved - the responders, caregivers, witnesses, and the driver. This was a preventable tragedy. We need to understand what is driving these events and how we can stop it. Media has an important role. 🧵1/x

Grateful that Bill is helping bring more attention on this. With the original patio delay we lost probably $50k in revenue. This time around it's probably going to end up being similar. I have at least had one conversation w/ a higher up at the city with hopes of overall improvement.
I wrote about St. Paul's Department of Safety and Inspections (DSI), long a thorn in the side of business owners trying to do just about anything. www.minnpost.com/cityscape/20...
@andersem.bsky.social When will Episode 3 of YIMBY Country drop on Spotify? I'm looking forward to it!
"A sidewalk represents public safety". 100 PERCENT. Gary doing the pedestrian advocacy we all should do.
This Danville, VA city council candidate made a very dramatic video about sidewalks and public safety, and I love it and him. Worrying about a possible milkshake duck situation, I looked at his FB page, but he seems ok. Juneteenth celebrations, community outreach, Methodists. A solid old gent.
one of my favorite recurring subplots in housing discourse is NIMBYs talking about any major dev project like it’s a form of settler colonialism and meanwhile actual indigenous people are like “we are going to build the biggest apartment buildings you have literally ever seen”
"We think that building housing is part of the solution. We think net zero is part of the solution. We think a car-light development is part of the solution. We think building a sense of place and community is part of the solution." -- leader of the Squamish nation www.nytimes.com/2026/06/15/o...
This seems like big news for Saint Paul. I'm cautiously optimistic.
Downtown St. Paul doesn't just need your love. It needs some sugar... a big daddy with deep pockets and a long-term strategy, someone who made a lot of money in real estate and isn't just out to flip buildings. Could Jamie Rand be the man? He says he just bought... www.twincities.com/2026/04/22/n...

The sentiment of this comic came to my mind when I read this article from today's Star Tribune: www.startribune.com/republicans-... Frustrating to see Republicans balk at the cost of transit projects even as we pay far more to widen I-494 and replace the Blatnik Bridge by Duluth.
Republicans seek to gut federal funding for three Minnesota transit projects
The Northern Lights Express train has bipartisan support, and the Republican advocating for it said he’s disappointed by the delegation’s letter urging elimination of funding.

One of the biggest disinformation campaigns ever applied to cities involves the constant claims that “driving pays its way.” It’s actually MASSIVELY subsidized, while things like walking, biking, public transit & supportive housing for the unhoused actually SAVE PUBLIC MONEY. #UrbanTruth
This April, we are working to raise $1,500 by April 30 to unlock a full matching gift. Every dollar will be DOUBLED. If you care about thoughtful growth and a welcoming Saint Paul, now is the time to give. www.sustainstpaul.org/donate

THANK YOU for attending our presentation Solving Saint Paul's Fiscal Challenges with Urban3!🏘️📈💵 This incredible turnout demonstrates both the urgent need for data-driven solutions as well as the commitment and love that Saint Paul residents have for our city.💙🏙️
"And remember, there's no problem too small, no task too big, for government to solve." As fun and silly as this initiative is, it's also powerful. I want gov't to be able to do big things. But before it can, people need to trust it (mostly, they don't). And maybe this is a step to rebuild trust.

St. Paul charges property owners quite a bit for buildings and not much at all for vacant land, a perverse disincentive, in the eyes of critics, to fill vacant lots. What if we flipped it? Could a "land value capture" tax be the panacea this city needs? www.twincities.com/2026/03/24/s...

Excited for this!! We need city-wide conversations about strategies to build a stronger economic future for Saint Paul and Heather Worthington and the @sustainstpaul.bsky.social team are the perfect people to be leading that charge.

This was only about two time-lapsed minutes of the Alex Pretti memorial ride in Minneapolis today. I'd guess there were at least 5x more people there than this, and probably significantly more than that. Absolutely mind blowing love and support showing up on bikes today.
It's a small thing, but it fills me with civic pride to walk through the giant park near my house and see Hmong families having cookouts, Somali parents pushing their laughing kids on the swings. Like, here are people who've endured horrors, and my city has welcomed them in to build peaceful lives.
Yes. My theory of the moment is Miller/Vance thought their view that immigrants threaten social solidarity would be widely shared. But ICE raids are driving native-born Americans to show solidarity with immigrants quite courageously. Now Miller is trying to disrupt that alliance with state violence.

2025: The year Edmonton built the missing middle – Jacob Dawang
Edmonton’s zoning reform is working. In 2025, newly legalized eight-home rowhomes drove a record increase in homebuilding, achieved by redeveloping only 0.39% of properties in mature neighbourhoods.
