ADDENDUM: As #nzpol nerd @norightturnnz.bsky.social reminded me, that Royal Commission? Reform advocates had been lobbying for that Royal Commission for over a decade before the Fourth Labour Government delivered on a tepid election promise in 1985. MMP wasn't some act of nefarious backroom whimsy.

The truth is that it was almost a decade between the report of the Royal Commission into the Electoral System in December 1986 and the first MMP election. That decade included two referenda, three general elections, and Parliament fully debating enabling legislation. FACT. #nzpol
