I feel like when people talk about the superiority of man made art over AI slop they tend to focus too much on the mystic of it and not enough on the fact that for a lot of artists the process is made up of a long series of complex and meaningful deecisions that a robot sucks at making.

Talking about how historical inspirations for fictional settings 🧵 I was shared an artist's post about a design they created claiming to be inspired by a specific bit of history, that ended up not at all showing through in the final picture. This is not uncommon.

sometimes it feels like a lot of normal people conceptualize an "artist" as a superposition of both A. a super wealthy fine art elite who does low effort abstract art nobody understands B. someone magically born with the art talent gene even though A is 0.000001% of artists and B is not a thing

Or when they crank the prices up. I got into a fight with someone on linkedin saying basically “animators have enjoyed their cushy existence for too long and now they are scared about ai” i was like ah yes the famously stable life of the illustrious animator

hey you. yes you. the OC artist who imagines full animations of your characters set to that song you listen to and wish you could make it real. you should do it. yes i know you don't know how and worry it won't meet your expectations. but you should do it anyway. trust me. you should do it

"Hey guys I just resigned from my job at Torment Nexus Inc. where I helped build the Torment Nexus and the Torment Nexus is pretty bad news" is a very funny type of person thats gonna start popping up now

“this person is bad so their work was always bad” is also a really dangerous view to take because it leads to - unconscious or not - a bias towards “but I do like this other person’s work, ergo they must be a good person” which, as we have seen over and over, is simply not true

What happens a lot on social media is when someone (Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman now Ed Brubaker) has allegations thrown at them people tend to leap out the woodwork saying "their work was never good." That helps no one as it's irrelevant. What matters is their actions and what they did.
