So what do we mean by HEWN when we talk about scoring future submissions? It's our metric that covers four of the main elements we look for in a story: Horror Embodiedness Weird Narrative Complexity (1/6)
Here's a page I made featuring art from "Terror Above Icehenge." Check out the Chain Story Project: https://www.chainstorycore.com/blog/free-fiction-for-deep-winter And the Annual of Oona the Unvanquishable in: https://scribe-and-sigil.com/
The Oona story in this issue is a special annual, with a full-color comicbook-style cover. The story itself is excerpted from my piece "Terror Above Icehenge." #FreeFiction #SwordandSorcery 1/3

Thanks to Bryan Young for putting together this nifty schedule of where I'll be at Gencon next week!
Wilson's dismissal of the sea peoples is odd and somewhat troubling for reasons articulated in this thread >>>
Film criticism aside, Emily Wilson's review of the Odyssey concerned me because it misrepresents Late Bronze Age history and reinforces an old Eurocentric pattern of dismissing the experiences--and reality--of ancient peoples other than the Greeks.
I reposted this based on her thread. After reading her review in the LRB, however, I have reservations, many which are summarized by this scholar: bsky.app/profile/naba...
I wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@OONAtheUNVANQUISHABLE/116997613724929105 Thread from my other account, prompted by #TheOdyssey
Having watched Nolan's The Odyssey, a key (and pretty well-known) attribute of Odysseus's character is his cleverness. I feel like this character trait is often lost in today's modern hero. Brute strength & super powers are favored over intelligence and strategic thinking. 1/3

Furious that Chris Nolan would disregard historical accuracy in adapting The Odyssey by making a "movie" with "cameras" instead of memorizing the entire story and then going on a nationwide tour to sing it to us while tripping on ergotized barley
