It's a worry that a human can produce a natural beautiful smile when the motivation/trigger for that emotion is hate.

I once found myself standing beside Elliott listening to him being interviewed by French TV at an opening of his dog photos exhibition. The interviewer was in full artybollocks mode pronouncing on The Work, & Elliott interrupted: “No no, you don’t understand. These pictures are my *hobby*. 😄

Szarkowski nails it with his fundamentals that define the medium of photography: the thing itself, the detail, the frame, time, and vantage point. All of which Ai slop is devoid of in any meaningful creative way.

This is what those who have fallen into the trap of generative AI simply can’t grasp. Photography isn’t about making a clever image it is rooted in the subject - the thing itself - and in the absence of that all AI images are by definition shallow, transient and meaningless.

I had always expected copycat projects of Outsiders but it is depressing to see people copying the wording and the style and then embedding my name and the Outsiders title in their social media posts so people click on Google thinking it’s me and end up being directed to their site.

Michelle, Manchester in 2019 from the Outsiders project. She became homeless at 13, having been abused as a child, and used to sleep in the bin sheds on the Offerton Estate in Stockport. She told me she felt safer sleeping rough as a child than she did at home.

Just had a lovely request from the Royal Photographic Society to do a video talk to thousands of their members. It was very nice to be asked but I don’t do video or audio interviews as I prefer to centre my work on the people in the photos.
