Everyone can't and shouldn't work in tech or finance. Everyone can't and won't be a multi-millionaire. A society needs civil servants, social workers and creatives. We need NHS doctors and dentists. We need teachers, people who work in publishing and the law. Where is the encouragement for this?

Regency-era mugs, gifts for #19thc children who managed to stick to their books & learn to read. Their mottoes are grim but maybe necessary admonitions, too, for the academic who's soldiering on while coming to terms with the fact that it's August now. I.e. I feel seen. #AcademicLife

The motto painted on a red background on this little mug reads "Idleness Brings Disgrace." The motto painted on the purple-ish background of this little mug is "Be Willing to do Well without Praise."

On another hot day, we are glad not to be subject to the same sartorial standards as the 19th century Manchester MP Thomas Bazley. The fact that he took off his jacket when giving election speeches in an unpleasantly warm room in 1868 was felt worthy of mentioning in his obituary 17 years later!

A snippet from a newspaper which reads 'As an incident of that contest, it may be mentioned that in addressing several crowded meetings of his supporters, experiencing the unpleasantly high temperature of the rooms, he took off his coat and spoke in his shirt sleeves.'
