Of all the cities in the world,James Baldwin used Hong Kong, my city, to illustrate love. "Pretend...that you... have never had the remotest desire to visit Hong Kong,...only a name on a map... some convulsion... throws you into connection [someone] who lives in Hong Kong[.]" ike.io/james-baldwi...
When you see the story about how the world now has its first trillionaire, and when you see the story about how laboratories in Congo have run out of supplies to test for Ebola, it is important to understand that in many ways these are the same story.
This is obviously a very important german court ruling. AI providers are liable for false information given by AI. But I'd like to draw your attention to the original cause of the court case. It's something I noticed often, and I feel it's very dangerous. 1/ www.wired.com/story/a-cour...
A Court Has Ruled That Google Is Liable for False Statements Generated by AI Overviews
The ruling holds that a company that designs, trains, operates, and manages an AI system must assume legal liability for any damages caused by the responses it generates.

I wrote about why I quit my job, and how weird and tiring tech feels these days.
Do I belong in tech anymore?

"Generative AI requires sacrificing the world’s water to feed its hideous data centres. Around the globe, chatbots induce schizophrenic delusions and urge teens to kill themselves – all while turning users brains to mush" Thanks Molly! ✊🔥 Artists too are fighting for a way of life. For sure we are!

I'm beginning to think that the worst part of a grey goo scenario would be humans going "yeah, it's not great but... It's sort of comfortable? Doesn't taste too bad either, and you know... It's everywhere, so why fight it? Look how much grey goo we've all got, right? Discrete objects are woke."
“AI is clearly sticking around so you have to get used to it” wrong. I don’t have to get used to shit. I am a practiced hater and I can keep this going for decades if I am required to

Eu não aguento mais IA em tudo. Não aguento mais falar sobre IA, ler sobre IA, trabalhar com IA. Eu só queria que todos os servidores de IA explodissem.
In the end it seems to me that one of the main distinctions between people who see LLMs as good and those who don't is whether they see the digital part of the world as "content" or "people". If it's all just content, LLMs make sense. If it's where people live LLMs become a somewhat dumb idea.
Open knowledge sharing AND copyright are both under siege. Whether you are for one or the other doesn't matter. This is a shared issue that's hitting "both sides". They are taking away YOUR choice, replacing it with regurgitation & centralisation while the open internet withers away. 📌 Instance🧵
They are making it impossible to host information online and drying up resources. Stop defending and supporting these malicious entities.
There are many reasons why AI slop has become the aesthetic of current digital fascism, but one may lie in the competitive and selective logic of AI training itself: GenAI amplifies the presence of those who are already highly visible – while rendering invisible those who are already marginalized 5/
deeply moved by this project from the Hong Kong Action Archives that is building a map of memories: everything from the taste of a now-closed dai pai dong to recollections of protest. 曾經,每年6月4日晚都會集滿人的地方。每次有咩唔開心都會喺度望住個維港沉思。we will remember. waysofrememberinghongkong.hkaa.co

Much of the "is AI art?" questions are really "is AI communication?" but in disguise. AI can make art because a urinal factory can make art. If AI makes art, it's through designation, not intent. AI is a one-sided simulation of communication processed exclusively by the viewer. There's no exchange.
If the AI is going to make mistakes too then WHY DOESN'T A PERSON JUST HAVE THAT JOB
