German media—most recently DIE ZEIT with their five-part podcast series The Gaza Chef—keeps producing podcasts and articles about my brother Mahmoud, treating his death like a mystery to be solved. They bring on experts to discuss AI algorithms, "target rooms," and pattern-recognition errors. They ask whether a machine made an operational mistake because our kitchen was "near" a hospital Israel had designated a target.

They wonder out loud if a baker moving through his own neighborhood looks, to a computer program, like a fighter. They call it "the banality of AI in warfare." I call it a targeted assassination.

When this project started, participating seemed like a good idea on the surface. It felt like a chance to honor Mahmoud's legacy and make sure people knew who he was and what he built. When we spoke to the reporter, we genuinely felt they would be fair. I still appreciate the time and care they put into investigating his life, and we got along well—I'm not attacking the person who worked on the story. But seeing how it all took shape, the final picture just feels incomplete.

When I look at the media coverage, even the basic geography gets twisted. Our kitchen wasn't near that hospital. It was over half a mile away. You do not make a half-mile error with high-precision surveillance and guided munitions. That is not how any of this technology works, and everyone writing these pieces knows it.
When I go back to what actually happened, the reality is plain: Mahmoud was killed because he was feeding starving people in northern Gaza. He was killed because someone decided that keeping thousands of displaced families alive was something that needed to be stopped.

There is a fundamental bias running through all of this coverage, German media most of all. Israel's military is treated as a system where violence only ever happens by accident—a glitch, an operational error, never a conscious choice. Israeli sources get believed automatically. Palestinians get treated as suspects who have to prove their own innocence, even after they've been murdered. Germany, burdened by its own unresolved history and national guilt over World War II, continues to let Palestinians pay the price for German sins—rationalizing Israeli crimes under the guise of journalistic objectivity and "institutional morality."

If you want to talk about AI, stop asking whether the system made a mistake. Ask how completely you have to dehumanize a population before you hand an algorithm the power to decide who lives and who dies.

My brother was not a glitch in a target room. He was a chef. He was a lifeline for people who had nothing left. He was murdered by a decision made with full intent, and I am done letting anyone dress that decision up as a software bug.
