1/11 In late June 2026, a paper in Nature by Labini & Galoppo using data from the DESI project claimed to have found anisotropy (directional differences) in the #Universe on scales up to 1 gigaparsec (about 3.26 billion ly). 🔭 This would have challenged the standard ΛCDM model.⚛️ 🧪 #cosmology

Wow! Blast from the past! While cleaning some boxes, I found a 1999 letter admitting me to the PhD program at the Cornell Center for Applied Mathematics, signed by none other than @stevenstrogatz.com as Director of Graduate Studies. I stupidly didn’t take them up on their offer to visit. :-/

Congress passed a budget that rejected cuts to the #NIH, NSF, NASA, DOE. However, OMB (i.e. Russel Vought) stalled in releasing funds. As of Mar 24, the NIH has only rewarded 15% of its $47B budget. PhD programs are shrinking. China & India will dominate. 🧪 universitybusiness.com/research-cut...

My thoughts on Director Bhattacharya's Fireside Chat at the NAM workshop (a long 🧵) Overall (1) He clarified what he said that NIH is doing with regard to improving replication. While these are concrete steps, they seem either naive or dependent of unproven technology. Time will tell. 1/30

Indeed. New grants are not getting funded, already funded grants are not getting paid, and non-competitive renewals are being held up. Focusing on the top line budget, instead of looking at what is really happening on “the ground” is deeply misguided.
