There is some flim-flam, though, and it seems fairly incremental for many of us. OpenAI's announcement of the Hugging Face attack is *marketing*. It is also *marketing* when they all claim that they're building products that might KILL ALL HUMANS, but geez, no, they just can't stop doing it.

Local AI is nice for the privacy and freedom implications... But it's not more environmentally friendly than datacenters. Datacenters exist because they scale efficiently to many people simultaneously.

datacenter inference is and will probably always be less environmentally destructive than local inference btw. the environmentalist option is not 'local AI'.
