The text below:

“And do you have an answer for me yet?” Matthias flipped the dagger, catching it deftly.

“What answer?” Arlan remembered perfectly well what Matthias had asked him last year. He still didn’t have a good answer.

“Why do you want to see the archmage when you know it’s pointless?”

“It’s not pointless. Not if I can get her to admit what happened.”

“What difference would it make? The manor fire, those deaths, it was the result of one mage’s twisted ambition. Even if he were alive to pay for his crimes, the dead would still be dead. Why put yourself through going there?” He flipped the dagger again. This time when he caught it, he stepped forwards and held the point to Arlan’s ribs, right over the scar that covered his side.

Just said goodbye to the most gentle cat we’ve ever known (except perhaps to birds). She was the perfect cat to have while my kids were growing up, and acted like a big fluffy teddy bear whenever they picked her up. She was gone too quickly and far too soon.

The fact that so many of the biggest supporters of AI in their medium are older people who've already had their time in the limelight explains so much about who this tech is actually for. Even moreso when younger creators are far more hesitant even if they don't outright reject it.

A week ago at Dragoncon I met Richard Garriott at a panel about his new Ultima game. Long story short he wants to use AI. He already has for concept art and ChatGPT generated fantasy language. I wrote an account with the hope that this could spread to the right people. Please pass this along.

#SundaySnips - SPICE From RESTING WITCH FACE, a silly fantasy grumpy/sunshine romcom novella about a chatty courier who gets healed by "The Old Hag" in the woods.

For a recluse living alone in the woods, Margot was not very keen to chat with Gus as he helped her work on her potions—sorry, elixirs—all day. Although perhaps that was exactly to be expected.
All he could think, however, was that he would have been so desperate for human interaction, in her shoes, that he would never shut up. He was barely shutting up now, even, and he’d talked to other humans just yesterday. The fact that Margot had been here alone for gods know how long should have made her more eager for his company, he’d assume. But clearly he was wrong about that.
He didn’t mind, exactly. He was happy enough filling the silence with his own observations and amusing anecdotes, although he would have liked to hear her say more. More than just telling him which ingredients to hand her from the shelf behind where he sat.
“What’s this one for?” he asked every time he passed her a new jar or satchel or tiny wooden box.
She’d give him one word answers. Headaches, or nausea, or inflammation. He didn’t ask whether they were meant to cure those things or induce them.
Still, he enjoyed watching her work. She did everything with such precision, measuring things out to the drop, handling delicate dried leaves with the the lightest of touches, deftly funnelling spices through the narrow spout of a bottle. Her face was set in a deep frown as she concentrated, making her features appear particularly severe, but he rather liked it. That was pure dedication on her face, accompanied by a quiet confidence in her abilities.

Spencer dreams of an ancient Fain city, dedicated to the gods of death and darkness. (not evil, just the literal absence of light) From book 2 of my romantic fantasy wip series about a priest of the dead and a thief with a heart of gold. #SundaySnips #WritingCommunity #Writingprompts #Wrencer

In his dreams, Spencer walked the streets of an ancient city under the ivory thumbnail of the moon. It was not Urbum Viventium, but rather its shadow, Urbum Mortuos. The broad strokes were the same, echoed in the layout of the streets and the arch of the rooftops and even the cut of the denizens' clothing. But where Urbum Viventium was all air and light and the ring of fire in the sky, its sister city was the cool, solid earth underfoot and the faint wink of the stars glinting on stone.

Spencer passed forges hammering steel alongside silversmiths pouring molds and setting gemstones. He drifted past courtyards and parks where lovers strolled and children played hide and seek in the deep shadows. He moved through markets that smelled of spices and good food and night-blooming flowers. Smiling faces bobbed and bowed as he passed and Spencer knew it as a gesture of deference. His feet carried him to the temple eventually, glinting dully in the faint moonlight.

There was something there that unsettled him. Gazing at the sloping stone steps he felt the wrongness as a knot clenched deep in his gut. Bile coated his throat as green-black shadows rippled on the temple walls chasing away the silver glow of moonlight. The deep echoing hoot of an owl startled him, a swooping shadow that blotted out the stars and plummeted towards his face. Spencer swore he felt the brush of feathers against his cheek as the bird swept past him towards a pale, outstretched arm.

And then he saw Her. The Gray Lady as she was worshiped by the Fains. Uxoria Mortis. The owl lighted on Her leather capped shoulder and a nightbreeze rustled Her silver white hair. Lavender light glinted in Her eyes, just above the charcoal veil, more smoke than silk. Spencer knew with certainty that if he brushed that veil aside, he would see the bleached white bone of a mandible rather than pale skin and soft lips. She held one arm outstretched, pointing insistently towards the temple.

From and Early part of book 2! Ask a question about magic and Heidi will answer imedately. Ask her what she wants to buy at the supermarket and it's a different matter... #WritingCommunity #Writingprompts #Writesky #HQpress

After a couple of burnt meals, most of the responsibility for cooking fell to Mina. That was its own challenge, as the loft wasn’t equipped with a modern oven or hob. All they had to cook with was the hearth and a small stove powered by enchanted heating elements. Mina hadn’t used either of those growing up, so even she misjudged things. They had defaulted to food that was simple to cook: instant noodles, pasta and rice, supplemented by whatever Mina could improvise.
She was starting to experiment more, and Heidi was doing her best to try the dishes Mina was trying to re-create from her childhood.
Mina would probably use the time Heid took to decide to look over the spice selection and work out what she wanted to play with next. When Hiedi glanced over to see if she was coming back that she noticed a thin, scruffy man watching her from behind the corner of the aisle. He wore a tweed jacket with leather patches on the elbows and darted out of sight when she noticed him. Whoever he was, he wasn’t very good at being stealthy, or blending in.

I miss TV shows with 20+ episodes. I miss filler episodes. I miss side stories that mean nothing, and other ones that turn out to be the most brilliant storytelling you've ever seen. Perhaps I am old, but so much made now just tires me.

it's two things, to me: 1) trans rights matter because trans people matter and deserve rights, not just because failing to stand for trans rights is a bellwether for inauthentic progressivism more broadly 2) if you can't be trusted on trans rights you can't be trusted on anything
