In the simplest language I can give. Activism is the practice of fighting to expand rights, not restrict them. That’s what I tell my students when we discuss civil rights and social justice.
This is also part of the framing issue. He’s not an activist. He’s not fighting for some type of equality or representation. He’s wants domination and oppression. That’s not activism.

I think part of why we get these weird articles because some folks are clinging to a caricature of what education is and what it’s supposed to do. With the assumption that we are the only line for things that are quite broad and complex involve community, rather than one institution.

Disinvestment in public education is one factor for increased household spending on children. Many of these activities were part and parcel of what was offered in schools. Cutting funding for the arts, music, sports, extra-curriculars has meant households who can, will spend out-of-pocket.
