Young people, especially autistic young people, rely on social media for socialisation because offline spaces are not accessible to them. Without also creating accessible, youth-friendly spaces in the local community, social media bans will just leave kids with nowhere to go.

This is nuts. Yes we need better protections online, but this is a massive overreach by Starmer. For many young people, especially marginalised ones such as trans and neurodivergent, online spaces can be a safe place for them to develop a genuine support community www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

The VC after telling 2600+ members of staff that they're at risk of redundancy: I think this is a really exciting time with huge opportunities for the academic sector, actually. There's nothing exciting about cutting this many jobs. What a vile, sociopathic thing to say

Final three paragraphs of the 12 May Times Higher Education article where VC Jane Norman defends the job cuts. The text in the image is:
"Overall, Norman believes that the changes are “exciting” and will future-proof the university through a transition period in UK higher education. While she stressed that she did not want to “minimise the adverse impact on staff”, she said the moment represents “huge opportunities” for the university.

“I think it’s a really interesting time in higher education…The world is changing, geopolitics is changing, and what students want is really changing. I think the universities that will survive and thrive are ones like ours that are taking a very proactive view of the environment, and thinking carefully about how they want to not just survive for the next couple of years, but to thrive in 10, 20, 30 years for the future.

“So actually it’s an exciting time for higher education, because I think there’s a real opportunity to shape our response and still stick with our core strengths of excellent research and excellent teaching, but make sure we do it in a way that’s modern, effective and fit for the future.”"

On my way to Brussels for the Sociolinguistics Circle, where I'll present data from my PhD outside of my department for the first time tomorrow! 🤩 And then a short visit home. Looking forward to seeing friends and colleagues and hearing Dutch spoken around me for a few days

‘If things carry on as they are, there will be very few opportunities for young people to study Music at university, and therefore hardly anybody training as music teachers, and the whole system will then be stuck in a vicious cycle of decline.’ thecritic.co.uk/a-discipline...

A discipline in danger | Alexandra Wilson | The Critic Magazine

I have written previously for The Critic about the closure of Music departments in British universities and it gives me no pleasure to be revisiting the issue. Unfortunately, the domino effect that…

Proud to announce that I've reached 'even the guy who doesn't usually work at the front desk knows my order' levels of regular customer who always gets the same thing at my local pasta place

It’s a few days after learning that the University of Nottingham will be suspending student intake for 48 courses – including all of Modern Languages where I’m partly based for my PhD work – and will likely close down these courses entirely, and I’m still just so angry and sad and in disbelief (1/7)

On my way home after three amazing days of #LavLang31. Another fantastic edition with a fomo-inducing programme filled with impossible choices, and a great unofficial social evening programme to get a taste of what Manchester has to offer. It's an incredible privilege to be part of this community 💜

I’m travelling to Manchester for #LavLang31 today, to present a paper that is strikingly relevant right now. In two months, there are national elections in the Netherlands. On Thursday, I present my study on the representation of trans rights in the previous elections. A short teaser:

The call for papers for the Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Conference at UoN is open until 30 June! This conference is organised by my peers and promises to be a great space for sharing research across disciplines from people at all career stages. Please share widely!

I'm looking to chat with nonbinary and/or trans speakers of several languages, especially including Irish, Hindi, Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, Russian, Polish, Icelandic - but also any other languages (aside from English / Spanish / French). DM or email me!

As a former child junior olympic-level runner, I have a few thoughts on the attacks on trans girls in sports. I ran for one of the most competitive teams in Southern California, and people who ran for my have gone on to become professional athletes. And these bans: they're fucking NONSENSE. 🧵

🚨 New Article! 🚨 How do cisgender listeners perceive trans voices? A fascinating study by Emmett Jessee & J Calder explores how gender identity affects how certain sounds are categorised by listening subjects. 🎙️🔍 📖 Read the full article here:

I agree with the observation that English is becoming a "smaller" language with Brexit and American isolationism. Which means Europe and the world need to embrace linguistic multilateralism more than ever: language skills and metalinguistic awareness are a vital public investment for the future. 1/4
