A weird downstream effect of LLMs I predict will start having an impact soon is that they are very helpful for fixing a lot of stuff that would not have been worth fixing when information about how to fix them was harder to get.

This new data compiled by @mattbarnum.bsky.social is invaluable. It makes clear that worries about the teacher shortage, downplayed by contrarians, were and are warranted. Importantly, it raises a largely ignored factor affecting student mental health, behavior, and academic success.

A ‘lost generation’ of teachers left the classroom. Schools are still dealing with the consequences.

Veteran teachers left, principals cycled through too, and high-poverty schools likely faced the greatest strain. Here’s what years of churn did to classrooms.

Been on my mind a lot in recent years: in education we tend to celebrate what is new—and it's good to try/experiment with new ideas, strategies, programs. But the second time you do a good thing, it is still a good thing. And the third time, fourth time, etc. Good is good.

Social media is full of solutions to AI usage (just teach better, just use blue books, just allow AI, just use AI, just don't allow AI) but if we're going to figure out what to do next, we need to recognize the problem we're trying to solve which isn't just cheating or just learning /3
