Chat, I was in a local scarfing establishment for breakfast this morning. On a couple of occasions, a waitress asked me, “would you like some more water/coffee, Friend?” Friend. That beats all Hell out of “Hon”, “Darlin’”, or whatever. I appreciated being called that so much.

Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

The good thing about our incredibly rancid culture war is that you can and should fight back (in part) by celebrating culture that you love. Especially culture that centers and uplifts marginalized people and rejects the miserable, joyless attitude that's at the heart of so much of our politics.
