I think I agree. One of my most miserable experiences at a movie was source material I knew deeply (Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas) from a director I loved (Gilliam) and a great cast (Depp, del Toro). To me, the whole thing was wrong in just about every way.

other good responses here, but I'll say - my experience is that academics want movies that somehow feel "true" to their expertise (Name of the Rose, for me) or are so obviously self-aware preposterous (A Knight's Tale) that we can have fun. O Brother is the latter.
