Hey, look what I just got, @mythjae.bsky.social! :D I forgot I had preordered it, so this was a delightful surprise on what has been an otherwise kinda stressful day!

Oh, hey, I found *one* place on the internet where the Shabti ebook still seems to be available! Presumably this is an oversight, but it’s there for now. 🤷 (CamCat ebooks are temporarily unavailable bc of transfer to new distributor, but no word on the timeline for getting them back online)

The way ppl talk about 19th-century photography: 1) Someone looks a little odd/stiff? OBVIOUSLY DEAD 2) Nobody smiled or goofed around for a photo! Ever! Exposure times were 7-10 business days for the entire first 100 years of photography & a photo portrait cost $10 million modern US dollars!
What is an extremely nerdy/obscure/specific thing you hate with a white-hot wrath?
🏺 Fascinated by this Egyptian shabti which seems to include a tongue sticking out. Currently at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. 📜 www.mfab.hu/artworks/1670/
Ok friends you know I wouldn't steer you wrong with a book recommendation. This is one of the most charming and yet still gripping books ever. I was thrilled the whole time but sometimes scared as well! Also the Chicago area references are PERFECTLY done.
I found out today that the ebook of The Shabti is currently not available for sale anywhere due to neverending distribution issues that have been plaguing my publisher. 🫠 But hopefully it will be resolved soon??? Meanwhile, if you’re in the US, it’s available from the Queer Liberation Library!
GUYS THIS BOOK IS GREAT nerdy Egyptologist + ex-Spiritualist grifter solve a spooky haunting and fall in love. it’s so clever and witty and charming but it will also make you NEVER want to be alone in a museum at night. read it with the lights on

What’s a small historical injustice/misfortune that never fails to break your heart? I’m talking about things that affected individuals on a personal level, not like large-scale atrocities. I have a few, but one of my big ones is that Scott Joplin never got to see a full production of Treemonisha.
Dashiel: -Tall and slim -Slick, dark hair and pencil mustache -Walks with a limp/cane user Hermann: -Thick, wavy brown hair that’s turning silver -Big, expressive hazel eyes -Shorter than average, bit of a dad bod
Here's a challenge for us writers: describe your MCs with their three most notable physical features. Are your characters visually memorable? Do they conjure up an image? So let's go... #ThreeBigFeatures
Freddie from my weird sapphic short story WIP
Man Frightened and Aroused
Alt: Gif of Sameer from Wonder Woman saying he is both frightened and aroused.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Let's have a gif day! Please share with me a gif that shows how your character is feeling right now (interpret the timing of that as you wish). No other context! Are they having a good day? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
This is a gorgeous version of this very sad and spooky folk song. Also of specific interest to me because, uh, I drew that illustration 👀 I think I posted it on Elfwood back in the day, so presumably that’s where this person got it. (Anyone else remember Elfwood? Feels like a fever dream…)

Ok, it has been a couple of weeks at least. Dare I open the rough draft of this weird little story and look at it again?
I wrote a really weird short story, and now I have to figure out what to do with it (once I edit it). 👀
My nine year old asked for a Rosetta Stone cake for his birthday
This film from my spouse is now on Amazon! It’s a very personal story many years in the making, and it tackles a lot of weighty themes about friendship, mental health, and the struggle to stay connected in an increasingly digital world.
@megaeralwrites.bsky.social's Egyptian thread reminded me of a Pathfinder game I ran years ago. During a session that took place in a brothel, one of the characters declared that there were more zombie wangs then he was comfortable with. 🤣🤣🤣
Another update to the great Egyptological Wang Thread for those eagerly following along, in case all this gets too buried in the nested replies
I will get back to Horus's penis problems. They involve lettuce. Sometimes there's also testicle thievery, which is at least tangentially related (that's actually more of a Set problem than a Horus one, but Horus is involved). But before that, I want to take a more obscure literary side-quest:
If any of my Bsky friends are planning to be at the ALA conference in Chicago this month, I’d love to see you! I’ll be there on Saturday, June 27th, at 3:30 PM to sign books at Booth #2136.
Ok, my dear friend @bananashirt.bsky.social has asked me to share my elite ball--er, peen knowledge re: wangs in ancient Egypt. So as not to hijack @leastactionhero.bsky.social's post, I'll start a thread here, which I will gradually update. Warning: thread will contain many ancient dicks
thread! thread! thread! (of dong art)
I have so many recs. But. To start, queer vampires and werewolves: @ravenswordpress.com's Tooth and Claw series. Queer urban fantasy? Also AK Faulkner--the Inheritance series. Historical urban romantasy: The Reanimator's Remains by @authorkaraj.bsky.social, The Shabti by @megaeralwrites.bsky.social.
Linking queerness to disability, and also picking the most marginalised group of people I could possibly think of and linking *that* to queerness and disability. This is to very intentionally subvert any (internalised) ableism in the reading audience.
What’s something you knew readers would be divided about when you wrote your story, but you decided to run with it anyway?
Using BL tropes that are normally used for the main love interests and turning them upside down, stripping them of romance, and using them on the MC and his abuser (who is NOT the love interest)

I killed off the main character of one of my books a quarter of the way through.

So with The Chosen One Con, our MC Max is quite a self-centred character and makes selfish choices. Some people are going to find him unlikable, especially at first! But he gets better. There are reasons for why he is the way he is, and I like exploring his character!

“I can’t believe you made me root for this man.” One of my lovely beta readers talking about the antagonist from LUST AND FOUND getting a redemption arc in HOUND FOR HELL 😂 It’s a romance, so Tristen gets his happy ending, but he definitely has to work for it. 💙📚💜🌈 #monsterromance

My main character performs a guitar solo that seems to be a fever dream caused by the summer heat and his emotions. But in my heart it's the emergence of evil that results in murder.

I’m not sure "divided" is the right word but I knew a bunch of decisions I made for "Faux Ho Ho" were born of spite, so. One I knew for sure though was having Silas note that while he’s gay, he’s also cis and white so… he should probably hire more queer historians for his queer history game.
