Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

Ty for sharing to help offset the spread of misinformation! I know yall are curious and want more receipts about other parts of this whole debacle but a reminder that a) there is going to be a court case and b) these are REAL people’s PRIVATE lives, so I probably won’t be sharing more for now! 🖤

I posted this on Insta a couple days ago! I think the misinformation has been largely cleared up (the creator who “reported” it took the video down with an apology, other involved parties have provided info, and there seems to be a healthy convo about how to read legal documents), but just in case!

There is currently an online rumor going around that one of my best and closest friends, Omar, was arrested. I can tell you…. this simply is not true. I am his roommate and can account for his whereabouts on most days. On the day in question he has multiple receipts and alibis and, most importantly, I SAW HIM AND KNOW THAT HE WAS NOT ARRESTED. His ex partner is posting things in such a way to make it seem like he is a dangerous criminal, and it’s not the first time she has publicly distributed misleading information. I’ve known Omar for almost 20 years. Omar is ace and does charity work for the LGBTQ community. I have known him to be a kind person who is socially conscious and aims for representation in the characters he creates. For the last year he has aimed not to take profits from the online D&D games he plays and instead donates his wages to things like Trans Lifeline.

Some of the reasons he took a step back from the space in this last year is because of a new job and new relationship. But another big reason was because of the toxic relationship he endured, the sadness and fear he felt about his ex, and the fact that she is a figure in this space. In one of the videos spreading this rumor, some comments call for Omar to drop out……of the panels he is on for an upcoming convention, Gen Con. I’d like to set the record straight that weeks ago, I personally advised him to drop out of those panels and not attend the con because I knew his ex would be there and I had a bad feeling that she was ramping up some sort of attack on him. Omar excused himself from those panels on my advice, long before these posts happened. He also had to make venue security aware when he went to do a public show, for fear that she would try something. If you see any news that he is no longer on the panels, please know that it is not because of any punitive action.Lastly I’ll add that I’m very disturbed and saddened by this turn of events. I wish everyone involved much healing, but for anyone who might be involved in this: please don’t drag my friend down in the process without any evidence or research. Luckily I think that his reputation speaks for itself with how willing his partner, friends, and community are willing to speak to him. In the future everyone will have their day in court and that is where I believe the truth will come out ❤️

Spoke with Surena, checked in, and I’m only going to say a few things. (Even if she did say I can let the chopper sing) The only reason I’m saying anything is because while everyone wants to step away “until they have all the facts”, that didn’t stop many people from spreading the lies via texts.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs. However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!

Alt text is shown in place of unloaded images." a drawing shows a phone with poor signal, and alt text is visible where the image should have loaded. 2. "Findabillity. Alt text helps to search content." A drawing shows someone searching 'dog with banana' and a post is shown underneath without the words 'dog' or 'banana'. It is implied to be part of the alt text. 3. "Screen readers. Alt is read out to people using text-to-speech software". There is a drawing of the output a screen-reader would show when viewing an image with alt text on bluesky. 4. "Translation. Alt text can be translated". A drawing shows a post being translated. The alt text is also translated into german. 5. "Readability. Text in images can be made legible" There is a drawing of some truly awful handwriting inside a speech bubble. The alt text clarifies what the text is supposed to say. 6. "Disambiguation. Description helps clarify intent." There is a drawing of a post with a picture of a creature. This is styled after the famous optical illusion of a rabbit and a duck. The alt text clarifies that the animal is a rabbit. It definitely looks more like a duck.
